Explore the Animal World

Suggested Sequence

Class 1:

Introduce project.
Introduce pathfinder.
Assign students different animal websites for evaluation (Check Your Website).
Share results.

Class 2:

Use Patrons Catalog.
Use World Book Encyclopedia (allow students to print information).

Class 3:

Demonstrate National Geographic Mammals CD-ROM.
Demonstrate Sirs Discoverer (allow students to print information).
Introduce Zoobooks.

Class 4:

Model completed Student Activity Sheet: Data.
Model Works Cited.
Research (have highlighters available).
Begin Student Activity Sheet: Data.

Class 5:

Research.
Complete Student Activity Sheet: Data.
Draw Picture.
Write dialogue.

Class 6:

Demonstrate scanner including crop and sharpen image.
Demonstrate multitasking (Kid Pix).
Draw/Scan Picture.
Save picture in KidPix.
Work on Dialogue (at least 15 seconds).
Complete Student Activity Sheet: Data.

Class 7:

Demonstrate centering text in Kid Pix.
Draw/Scan Picture.
Save picture in KidPix.
Work on Dialogue (at least 15 seconds).

Class 8:

Explain rubric.
Continue scanning and completing Kid Pix picture.
Approve dialogue, practice reading it aloud.

Class 9:

Discuss Slide Show.
Decide order of slides by voting
(ABC, region of world, continent, type of animal, food, size, etc..)
Put completed pictures in Slide Show.
Assign title, ending credits, etc., and make appropriate graphics.

Class 10:

Add dialogue and remaining graphics.
Save Slide Show.
Save Slide Show in QuickTime movie format or transfer to videotape (add to Webpage).

Class 11:

Staple and collect completed worksheets: rubric, data, picture, dialogue, works cited.
Share completed Slide Show with group.

Notes:

Print materials can be kept in portfolios/folders during project.
Slide show pictures must be in same folder as slide show.
Scanning is time consuming - allow at least 10 minutes each.
Students can be pulled from class individually to add dialogue.
Encourage students who are ahead of others to use time appropriately
(Read more about their animal, create a different graphic organizer).

Parameters:

Student Activity Sheet: Data used as graphic organizer
Slide show created as final product
Small group - 12 to 15 students at a time
Ten computers
Single scanner
