Sculpture Garden

In 1996, a group of Travilah parents suggested to the PTA that a beautification project be started that would feature a sculpture for all to enjoy. It would enhance Travilah's outdoor landscape and encourage art appreciation. A parent committee was established to plan the project. Chaired by architect Mickey Finn, the design committee included Mark Culbertson, Susan Gibeson, and Rejni Nair. To fund the project, community members were asked to purchase a brick in someone's honor. Several business were involved in the completion of the project that we would like to thank and acknowledge: steel figures by Federal City Iron, paving and retaining walls by Outdoor Architects and Hummel Landscaping, inscribed bricks by Potomac Valley Brick, and landscape materials installation by Wootton Landscaping Company. The dedication ceremony was held June 5, 1998 at the annual Travilah Fest. It was covered by The Washington Post, the North Potomac Gazette, and the Potomac Almanac. Bringing a smile to all who see it, the sculpture garden is a place of charm and meaning.

Bricks can still be purchased for placement on the pathway. To order a name brick, please contact Mickey Finn, 301-294-9384.

Spring 1998 finds the bus circle ready for construction!

Large stones and dirt were brought to the site to make the garden wall.

A level was used to make sure the wall was straight.

The design included a walkway and a circle above the curving wall.

The soil was improved so that plants had a good place to grow.

The bricks arrived and were sorted.

The bricks were placed in position along the pathway.

Over 200 bricks were ordered in honor of families, students, and teachers!

The level was used again to make sure the path was straight.

The curve of the circle made laying the bricks complicated.

There are still bricks waiting for names!
Would you like to honor someone at Travilah?

The steel figures of children holding hands arrived and were welded and bolted in place.

Volunteers painted the figures.
Mrs. Barnhart, our art teacher, described this blue as
"bluer than the sky."

It was a hot day . The work was hard!

Thanks Mr. Finn, Mr. Culbertson, Mrs. Lapping, Mr. Mead,
and Mr. and Mrs. Barnhart for spending the day adding the bright colors!

Wootton High students (Wootton Landscaping Company) added plants around the wall.

A long hose was needed to water the garden.

Mulch was added to protect the plants.

Everything was finished!

The dedication was held June 5.

Even though it started to rain, the crowd was excited.

The pathway looked perfect as everyone looked for their name.

Mr. Finn was the hero of the day.

There was a scramble to get a good view of the ribbon cutting.

Mr. Finn, thanking everyone, invited Mrs. Lapping to cut the ribbon.

Mr. Finn, Mrs. Lapping,
Mr. Culbertson,
Mrs. Nair, Mrs. Gibeson
Thank You!

Congratulations to all who contributed to this fine addition to our school. We hope visitors to our school enjoy it too!
