I-Messages

I-messages are a unique way to let others know how you feel. Here are the steps to follow when giving someone an I-message:

1. Say the person's name.
2. Tell them how you feel.
3. Tell them why you feel the way you do.
4. Say what you want to happen.
Examples of I - Messages

     When giving an I-message, fill in the blanks as appropriate:

____________, I feel ____________ when ____________.

Please __________.

  • Bill, I feel angry when I'm teased about my weight. Please don't tease me.
  • Sue, I feel sad when rumors are spread about me. Please stop spreading rumors about me.
  • John, I feel frustrated when my ideas aren't listened to. Please let me share my ideas.
