About the Program

We believe that participation in athletics will have a positive impact on student achievement, behavior, attendance and character development. Therefore, it is our goal to encourage every Wheaton student to participate in the athletic program during their years here.

The Program

We offer Varsity and JV teams in a wide variety of sports in three seasons.

Eligibility

In order to be academically eligible, students must have a 2.0 GPA from the previous quarter, with no more than one failing grade. Grades are monitored by coaches during the season. Players will be required to periodically carry a grade sheet to their teachers, and may be asked to sit out games and practices in order to improve grades. In addition to the homework center, the Athletic Department will provide study hall opportunities for athletes.

Required forms for tryouts

Before participating, students must have a physical (good for one calendar year), and a signed parent permission form.  These forms may be found in the main office, the Athletic office, or online at the Wheaton website. The Athletic Department arranges to have a doctor come to the school before each season to provide physicals for $25 cash.

Commitment

Seasons last for a period of 2-3 months, during which teams practice every day for two hours, and play a number of games. Players are expected to attend all practices and games unless there is a very compelling reason. Please contact the coach if your child will not be able to attend practices. While players must provide their own transportation to and from practice, for most teams, buses are provided to away games. On some teams, players may be required to purchase socks, mouthguards or other uniform accessories which are generally not returnable for reuse by someone else. Uniforms are provided, and players are obligated to keep them clean and undamaged, and to return them promptly at the end of  the season, or else they will incur a school obligation.

Parent involvement

The Athletic Program relies on the support of parents and other members of the school community. The Athletic budget provided by the county is not by itself sufficient to fund the Athletic program, so admission to games and fundraisers are important. Beyond the basic obligation of enabling your son or daughter to attend practices and games, you are encouraged to support the program by:

  1. attending games (some charge admission which goes to support the Athletic Department: $5 for adults, $3 for students, $1 for children ages 6-11),
  2. volunteering to help out with your team in a variety of ways, such as driving players to games, working the concession stand when your team has signed up for it. The profits from the concession stand go into the Athletic budget,
  3. helping to set up for games, providing snacks or meals or other ways suggested by the coach.
  4. meet your son or daughter’s coach and find out how you can help out by coming to our Meet the Coaches Night, scheduled during the first week of the new season.
  5.  We hope that the Booster club will be reorganized this year to provide parent support for the Athletic program as well as other programs here at Wheaton HS.
