What is Homecoming?
Homecoming is an annual event that takes place at the beginning of every school year. It is a time to show school spirit and raise funds that can be used by the student body for the rest of the year. Homecoming consists of Spirit Week, Battle of the Classes, a pep rally, a football game, and a formal dance.
What is Battle of the Classes?
This is the second year that Whitman is having a Battle of the Classes. Students from each grade try out for their class team by running an obstacle course. The five girls and five boys from each grade with the fastest times compete in front of the entire school in various events, such as a relay race, a water balloon toss, and free throw shooting. The theme for BOTC this year is TV channels.
What are the important dates and locations?
Spirit Week is October 20-24. Battle of the Classes is Tuesday, October 21st at 7:00 pm in the main gym. The pep rally is during the school day on Friday the 24th. The football game against Winston Churchill is on Friday the 24th at 6:30 pm in the Whitman stadium. The dance is in the main gym from 8:30-11:30 pm on Saturday the 25th. Doors close at 10:00. Please note that once students leave the dance, they are not allowed to re-enter.
Where can I buy tickets and for how much?
Tickets for the dance are on sale during lunch by the main office. They're $30 for a couple's ticket and $17 for a single ticket. Two friends who wish to save a little money may purchase a couple's ticket as long as they enter the dance at the same time. Dance admission changes to $20 at the door the day of the dance and may only be purchased as a single ticket. Admission for Battle of the Classes is $5 and will be collected at the door. For the football game, adults pay $5, students with a Whitman ID or schedule card pay $3, and children 7-11 years old pay $1. Parents, students, and staff who ordered either the Homecoming or the BOTC shirt may wear the appropriate shirt to each event and get in free.
What is the dress for the dance? Do students need a date?
The dress is formal. Girls should wear dresses or a pants suit. Boys should wear a suit and tie or a sport jacket and tie with nice pants. A coat check will be available; however, Whitman is not responsible for any lost or stolen goods, so valuables should not be brought to the dance. Students do not need a date. Many students go out to dinner and then to the dance with a group of friends.
