Grand Tour of Italy: Over spring break, a 10 day trip leaving March 25th or 26th. The tour is through EF Tours and is sponsored by Jean Diamond (Art Department) and Courtney Osborne (History Department). The anticipated cost is around $2400, which includes flight, hotel, food and tours. Students can sign up by going to www.eftours.com. Click “students” in the top right corner, then “get started”, then “enroll in your teacher’s tour”, and enter the tour number 983076. For more information or questions, see Ms. Osborne or Mrs. Diamond at Walt Whitman High School.

National Security Language Initiative for Youth Program: WWHS has recently sent three students to the National Security Language Intiative for Youth Program: one to Russia (summer), one to China (one semester), and one to Jordan (gap year). The number of available scholarships for NSLI for Youth 2010-2011 has increased thanks to the U.S. Department of State. Please encourage your child to apply if he is interested in studying Hindi, Turkish, Korean, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, or Persian.

NOTE: No previous knowledge of these languages is necessary for study as at least one group per country is filled with beginners. There are also intermediate and advanced groups. This is a full scholarship for summer, semester, or academic year (gap year) abroad. It is the U.S. government's way of encouraging students to study a Critical Language and experience cultures where these languages are spoken.

The deadline is December 4, 2009. Applications are available and can be completed online at http://www.nsliforyouth.org/ . The Letter of Recommendation form is something interested students can print and bring to their teachers, as the application is completed.

Any students with questions can see their Guidance Counselors, Laurie Safran, or Michelle Quackenbush. Most questions can be answered through http://www.nsliforyouth.org/ .

Costa Rica: The Manos Unidas club at Whitman is planning a service trip to Costa Rica over Spring break 2010. Students will earn 24 SSL hours and tour around the area where the community service will occur. The cost of the trip is $2000. Please see Mrs. Gough Alonso at Walt Whitman for more information.

Visit Japan: Next summer it will be time for our biannual trip to Japan to visit Whitman's sister school. This is a chance to participate in the student exchange program with Kanaga Sogo High School. During the trip students will be staying with 2 different host families during a 2 week period while on the trip. The total trip time will be for 5 weeks and students will be able to experience many activities such as:

- eating and dining with Sumo wrestlers (a rare opportunity)
- climb Mt. Fuji
- learn how to make soba noodle and sushi
- participate in a Japanese Tea Ceremony
- Wear Japanese kimono in traditional style at Movie Studio
- Visit Jiburi Anime museum
- enjoy flower arrangement lessons at a University where Japanese royalty attend
- visit Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, Kure, Nagoya, Sagami city in Kanagawa prefecture and Tokyo, 9 different cities in Japan

There will be an informative meeting on Thursday, October 22 in room A304 at 7:30pm. There are limited spaces, and priority is given to Japanese language students.

The new meeting time will be Thursday, October 29th at 7pm in room A304.  Thanks for your patience and understanding.
