A Message From Mrs. Starr

This year has certainly flown by! It is now the time of year when there are many activities going on within the school. Please be assured that instruction will continue until the very end of school. At some point before the end of this school year, all classes will be engaging in individual reading level assessments. During that time, quality instruction will still be taking place in the classroom. You will be informed as to what level your child is performing on at the end of the year. This will assist you greatly in choosing books for your child, whether through the summer reading program at Woodfield. (Please see attached flyer.), the Damascus library, or your local book store.  It will also greatly assist your child’s next year’s teacher(s) in knowing where to start instruction in reading. Please seize every opportunity that you have available to you to foster good reading habits with your child.

5th Grade Enjoys Strathmore Concert

On Wednesday, 5th graders were provided with their second opportunity to attend a concert at Strathmore. This was the first time that MCPS had made this event possible for 5th graders. Many students came up to me and told me how they recalled going in the second grade. These concerts really lead to students’ appreciation of all types of music.

Muffins for Moms

Thanks to the PTA and the fathers who made Muffins for Moms such a huge success. This event was well attended. Thanks to Greg Kopp, coordinator; Jim Fraser, Scott Horst, Terry Wardlaw, Bruce Keaner, Ron Benson, Carlos Winffel and to mom, Siobhan Kopp.  This event is always such a special one. It’s a great Mother’s Day gift!

Beautification Saturday Morning

Don’t forget that Saturday morning, May 17th, from 9:00 a.m. until 12 noon will be Beautification Day at Woodfield Elementary. The coordinators for this event are Jim Fraser and Deb Krizman. Woodfield looks so great on the outside because of all of the hard work from the volunteers on these important days and the building services staff. When I tell people that I am principal at Woodfield, individuals are always quick to compliment me on the ways our grounds look.

Menu Change for Wednesday, May 21

Additional Shelving in Art Room

Thanks to Jim Fraser for adding additional shelving to the Art Room. This really will make Mrs. Sousa’s life easier now that she has more space to store our students’ art work and supplies. Thank you, Jim.

Woodfield Student Art Show – May 30

Please note this important change in the date of the Student Art Show at Woodfield. This date needed to be changed because some of the student pottery was not drying sufficiently. The art show will be on May 30th at 6:00 p.m. Please come out and see your talented children’s art work. Thanks to Mrs. Sousa for all of her hard work.   I am sure that the show will be absolutely fabulous!

Scholastic Book Fair

The Buy-One Get-One Scholastic Book Fair is right around the corner! This Woodfield PTA sponsored event will be held before and after school Monday, May 19 through Friday, May 23. The hours are 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily, with special evening hours Wednesday and Thursday, when we will be open from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in conjunction with our piano recital. This is a buy-one get-one-free fair, which means you buy one item and get the second item of equal or lesser value for free.

In conjunction with the Book Fair, the PTA is sponsoring a special philanthropic project to benefit the Woodfield Media Center.  If you wish to participate, there will be a cart at the cashier table where you can select your “free” book to donate to our Media Center.  This is just another great way to teach our kids about reaching out to others and showing that “Woodfield Cares!”

Stop by the Book Fair and stock up on your summer reading. You’re sure to find lots of great deals. Hope to see you there!

Footprints for a Cure!!

Please note our footprints on the school wall. These are all a result of contributions donated by students and parents to assist in finding a cure for cancer! Our school raised an amazing $497. A special thanks to the Student Government Association and Mrs. Mindy Conway for organizing this event.

Collection Drive to Benefit Second Chance Wildlife Center

To help the wildlife rehabilitators who care for the injured, sick and orphaned animals that live among us, we will be collecting items needed for the care of these wildlife patients from Monday, May 12th until Friday,   May 23rd.  Most of the animals under the care of rehabilitators at centers such as Second Chance have been adversely affected by human activities.  Look for a flyer that provides details about Second Chance Wildlife Center and a list of needed supplies to come home on Friday.  Questions can be directed to either

Michele Lowe at 301-482-2533 or Deb Krizman at 301-482-0823.

Field Days

Thank you to all the volunteers who signed up to help with Field Days. We could not do it without you. Thanks to Ms. Spillman for planning and staging the Field Day events for our school. Some have wanted to know why we do it during the middle of May. When scheduling this event, we have to make sure that we leave enough time so we can re-schedule it in case of rain. It is also more difficult to get volunteers to assist with this event as the time for school to close draws near. The heat is the third factor. When field days are scheduled too close to the end of the year, then the chances are greater that the heat may be a little too much for the students to engage in prolonged exercise. Therefore, we thought that the chances of May being cooler than June were good. Let’s hope that we were right!

Each speaker will be asked to do quick presentations to students as they visit the various career booths.  If you or someone you know has an interesting profession and would like to share information with children from ages 5 to 11 years old, please contact Mrs. Walker, counselor at 301-253-7085.

No matter what you do – plumber, nurse, architect, bus driver, police officer, lawyer, computer engineer or beautician – the children can learn about the world of work from you!

Please call Mrs. Walker, as soon as possible for more information or to volunteer.  We hope to hear from many of you.  Thank you for your support.
