2007 Varsity Tennis ends season with 7-5 record

The Girls’ Tennis team held on to its place among the top five teams in Montgomery County in the Fall 2007 season. Losses were to extremely strong teams from Walter Johnson, Churchill, Magruder, Whitman and Bethesda-Chevy Chase. Girls Tennis has been one of the most successful athletic teams at Wootton. This year’s success was due largely to depth of the team and strength in both singles and doubles, even after losing the top three singles to graduation. Coached by Brian Ligon, in his 9th year, the Patriots had strong results at the County Tournament in October: #2 Singles Sara Biron, #1 doubles Monica Chan and Leeya Maizels, #2 doubles Michelle Kim and Vicky Lin and #3 doubles Sidney Kao and Mali Ramachandran all made it to the semi-finals. #1 Singles Rachel Heimberg played an excellent match against the eventual regional champion, Elizabeth Kaufman from Churchill, losing 2-6, 5-7.

Outstanding Player Awards for 2007 were given to #1 singles Rachel Heimberg and #2 Sara Biron. Four seniors will be graduating in 2008, and the team wishes them the best: Monica Chan, Sidney Kao, Varsha Kishore and Michelle Kim.
