The pompons provide entertainment to spectators during halftime or between athletic contests. Most squads coordinate their efforts with the school's marching band and perform a 4 to 7 minute halftime show.
 

The number of competitions in which the squad participates will be determined by the sponsor, athletic director, and the principal, but will not exceed three. The MCPS Pompon Championship will be held on February 14, 2009, at Richard Montgomery High School. Details will be sent to athletic directors. The sponsor and athletic director will ensure that competition does not take precedence over participation in and support of school athletic events.
