5/23/2006--A Mental, Not A Physical, Face-Off: Wootton Student Again Selected to US Physics Team
College Park, MD (May 23, 2006) - David Chen, a senior at Wootton High School in Rockville, MD, has been selected for the second year as a member of the 2006 United States Physics Olympiad Team. Scoring higher than over a thousand other students to earn a spot on the prestigious team, he may be selected to face the challenge of meeting physics students from all over the world in a brain-to-brain competition.
Chen is one of twenty-four students from across the US who have been chosen to train for the mentally grueling exams and lab tests they'll face at the International Physics Olympiad. The Olympiad is held this year July 8-17 in Singapore at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University. Teams from 85 countries will be there, the most that have ever participated.
To prepare, the high-schoolers are spending ten days at the physics training camp at the University of Maryland, College Park, conducting lab experiments, taking exams, and hearing presentations from prominent scientists.

On May 25, the students will travel to Washington, DC to for a tour of the area and to meet their Senators and Representatives in person. They will also hold a special awards ceremony honoring Reps. Rush Holt (D- NJ) and Vernon Ehlers (R-MI), who both hold physics PhD's. The students will be thanking Reps. Ehlers and Holt for their support of the physics team for seven years. The students will present a physics-related toy to their member of Congress. Pictures of the students and their members of Congress will be available after the event.
"These most capable students show what can be done here in the U.S. We often find that students are embedded in supportive families who go to extraordinary lengths to help the students achieve success academically and in the international competition," said Dr. Bernard Khoury, executive officer of the sponsor of the event, the American Association of Physics Teachers, in College Park, MD.
Teacher Michael Thompson nominated Chen to the team. A short bio of Chen is available online at http://www.aapt.org/olympiad2006/bio.cfm?StudentID=681  His 2005 bio is available at http://www.aapt.org/olympiad2005/bio.cfm?StudentID=497
The U.S. Physics Olympiad Program was started in 1986 by AAPT to promote and demonstrate academic excellence. The Olympiad is a nine-day international competition among pre-university students from more than 60 nations. The training camp is sponsored by the AAPT and the American Institute of Physics, College Park, MD.

5/12/2006--Twenty-two MCPS students have won $2,500 National Merit Scholarships after
meeting rigorous academic standards and other criteria. The local scholars account for 40 percent of the 54 winners from Maryland. Nationally, 2,500 winners were selected
from about 15,000 fi nalists in the 2005- 2006 program, sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Wootton's winner is
David K. Loewy, computer engineering
The scholars were selected based on information submitted by fi nalists and their schools, including academic records, scores from two standardized tests, school and community activities, an essay describing interests and goals, and recommendations. The number of winners named in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating high school seniors. About 16,000 semifi nalists were named last fall. MCPS had131 semifi nalists. The announcement brings the number of Merit scholars from MCPS to 34, including 12 winners of corporate-sponsored awards. On May 24 and July 10, NMSC will announce the winners of scholarships sponsored by colleges and universities.

5/4/2006--Wootton's Chemathon teams have once again made us PROUD!  The annual Chemathon competition was held last Saturday at the University of Maryland with 25 schools competing from Maryland, Virginia and DC.  The competition consists of 5 lab events and 5 written events.  Our Year 1 Chemathon team and Year 2 Chemathon teams both placed first!  Year 2 team members were: Daniel Hsiao, Allen Tsaur, Joe Chen, Monica Chan, Lily Yu and Andrew Chang.  Year 1 team members were: Christine Wang, Christine Sun, Seonwoo Lee, Ameen Solemani, Abhinov Ettyreddy, and Alex Yin.

5/3/2006--Way to go Club EAST for making it to the finals in the Space Settlement and Design competition. This is an amazing achievement and a wonderful experience for the students!

5/3/2006--CONGRATULATIONS TO MR. THOMPSON AND THE PHYSICS BOWL TEAM….

Wootton's Physics Bowl efforts have produced the number one team in Division II [students who are in or who have taken AP], region V. This group of young men and women posted the fourth best score in the country AND we beat Blair's team, which is in a special category for magnet schools.

Each school's score is the sum of the top four point scorer's, and so it should come as little surprise that we had the NUMBER ONE AND NUMBER TWO INDIVIDUAL SCORES IN DIVISION II, REGION V. These scores came from David Chen and Jonathan Long, two of our Olympiad semifinalists (David is now a finalist). We do not yet have official scores from the other individuals, but I suspect that the other two contributors are Andrew Chang and Nadezhda Serova, both of whom will be back to Wootton next year.

11/18/2005--ROCKVILLE, MD--A total of 160 Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students--by far the largest number ever--were among the nation's top performers on the Advanced Placement (AP) exams last spring, according to The College Board.

MCPS had 20 National Advanced Placement Scholars in 2003 and 121 in 2004, compared with this year's high of 160. National AP Scholars from Thomas S. Wootton: Daniel Baron, Polina Belyantseva, Keri Berman, Grace Chang, David Chen, Kaixi Chen, Angela Fan, Philip Hewes, John Hooff, Calvin Hsu, Alex Israel, Kirill Kustov, Eric Liang, Zhimei Luo, Laura Onken, Andrew Sun, Andrew Ward, Yunoing Wang, Youkuan Yan, Yao Yue, Zhiyuan Zhang.
