The Board of Education's committees explore topics in detail to provide recommendations to the full Board. The following committees were established in 2013 and continue to do important work for MCPS students, staff, and families:
Citizen advisory committees are required by the Annotated Code of Maryland, Education Article §4-112, to ensure that local school boards will be informed by a variety of opinions from citizens and staff when considering specific issues, activities, and programs. Committee meetings take place throughout the year and are listed on the Board’s meeting calendar. Committee meetings are open to the public in person and via livestream.
All Board of Education documents, agendas, informational summaries and other meeting materials are publicly available in BoardDocs.
The recorded webcast of the meeting is considered the official meeting minutes. Informational summaries for the meetings are made available online when completed and approved.

Responsible for reviewing issues pertaining to the management and audit of Montgomery County Public Schools’ fiscal, capital, and human resources, including the Board’s operating budget, the Capital Improvement Program, staffing plans, and allocations.
Responsible for working with Superintendent and staff to develop draft policy; presenting draft policy to the full Board; and making recommendations regarding policy.
Working closely with the superintendent, the committee may provide initial recommendations based upon in-depth review of issues and instructional programs designed to meet the needs of special populations that require special education services, gifted and talented instruction, alternative programs, ESOL services, and multilingual supports. The committee’s work plan will consist only of tasks as assigned by the full Board.
Responsible for providing a forum to consider the long-range direction of the school system; evaluating approaches to long-range planning; and making strategic planning recommendations to the Board.
On December 5, 2024, the Board of Education created an advisory committee focused on communications and engagement. The new advisory committee replaces the Communication and Stakeholder Engagement Committee. More information about the advisory committee will be shared soon.
