Unit 4 is typically an eight-week unit taught from April to June.
Students begin to develop foundational understandings about estimation in kindergarten. In Unit 3B, students estimated length using the comparative words of more or less and by using a nonstandard unit as a known length. During Unit 4A, students estimate quantities less than 20 using benchmarks of 5 and 10. They begin by determining quantities that are more or less than a benchmark set of items and later use a benchmark set to make a reasonable estimate of a quantity. In Grade 1, students begin to develop the understandings necessary for computational estimation.
Also in Unit 4A, students begin to develop an understanding that numbers are composed of parts. This concept is foundational to other number concepts such as place value, number fact families, and common fractions. Students use concrete materials to break numbers into parts, put parts together to make a whole, and describe the results of both. Students apply their understanding of the part-whole concept to solving joining and separating problems. In Grade 1, students extend their understanding of addition and subtraction through problem solving contexts, and they develop a series of strategies that help them perform the operations.
Experiences for developing an understanding of money concepts and skills begin in kindergarten. In Unit 4B, students explore and describe the attributes of a penny, a nickel, and a dime, as well as identify and state the value of these coins. They count sets of pennies, sets of nickels and pennies, and sets of dimes and pennies through 19¢. In Grade 1, students identify and state the value of a quarter and count combinations of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters through one dollar. They also solve addition and subtraction problems involving money amounts through one dollar.
