Polynomials are used to model and analyze quantitative relationships in real-world applications. In this unit, students apply the laws of exponents to operations with polynomials. Students factor polynomials and solve equations using factoring. These concepts provide a foundation for further study of functions and polynomials in unit seven and subsequent courses.
The emphasis in this unit is on developing students’ conceptual understanding of manipulating symbolic expressions as well as procedural fluency so that they are able to extend what they know to different types of problems. Students build on their number concepts to understand equivalent algebraic representations. A solid conceptual basis is critical for students to understand algebraic procedures and be able to apply them to problem situations.
Unit 6 is typically a five-week unit taught in March and April.
