In this unit, students extend previous knowledge from earlier courses regarding linear functions. The average rate of change of a function over an interval for both linear and nonlinear functions is determined. Students discover that in a linear function the average rate of change is constant for every interval in the domain of the function. Connections between the average rate of change of a linear function and the slope of the graph of the function are made. Linear functions can be used to model many real-world situations. Students determine whether a linear model is appropriate, and if it is, write the appropriate linear function. Emphasis is placed on the practical meaning of the slope and y-intercept in context. Students should be able to determine a line of best fit by hand or by regression analysis with the calculator. Predictions from the model will be made, and the relative error in making those predictions is analyzed. The concepts of interpolation and extrapolation are explored. Piecewise functions are given special emphasis in this unit. Students should be able to represent piecewise functions, numerically, graphically, and algebraically.
