Equity Department

Student achievement cannot happen without equity and excellence

WE BELIEVE...

  • Race and culture exert a powerful influence on policies, practices and interactions in every aspect of Montgomery County Public Schools and can lead to the racial predictability of achievement and success.
  • This racial predictability is not simply a factor of individual beliefs and actions, but is institutionalized.
  • To eliminate this racial predictability we must remove institutional barriers and demonstrate culturally proficient policies, practices and behaviors.

Our Mission

We will advance racial justice and cultural proficiency by interrupting systems of bias (implicit and explicit), oppression, and inequity in our policies, practices and procedures by challenging every MCPS employee to be courageous, persistent and effective in confronting and resolving racial and cultural issues that impact everyone but disproportionately impact the academic and social emotional success of students of color.

Equity Department
Overview

Learn about all the programs, trainings and supports that the MCPS Equity Department offers to schools, teachers and the community. The goals of the EIU are to bring equity to all MCPS students, staff and families by promoting cultural proficiency, to stop hate bias incidents and foster positive relationships with the members of our diverse population.

MCPS Equity Student Dialogues

Watch and learn how teachers and elementary schools can empower students to become upstanders and not bystanders, to learn more about culture and the negative effects of stereotyping, as well as how to become more culturally proficient. The MCPS Equity Department offers a series of 4 lessons called Equity Student Dialogues to teach students these concepts and practices. The Unit also offers trainings for school staff to enable them to teach these lessons as well.
