Join the MCPS Family Engagement Advisory Team

MCPS parents are invited to apply to be a part of the MCPS Family Engagement Advisory Team (FEAT). The purpose of the FEAT is to provide opportunities for MCPS families to learn about and provide input and feedback on the district’s programs and initiatives. Some sample responsibilities of FEAT members include: solicit feedback from other parents in the community, participate in efforts to promote a welcoming environment in all schools, increase engagement with all students and families equitably.

MCPS is committed to improving students’ school experience and academic success and ensuring equitable learning opportunities by engaging families in decision-making and program review. The FEAT will meet at least seven times during the school year and members will be required to serve a two-year term. Applications are due August 26.

Ms. Gordon, Parent Community Coordinator at Benjamin Banneker MS, Burnt Mills ES and Fairland ES, received the Maryland PTA Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest recognition bestowed by the PTA and given to only those who have demonstrated outstanding service in support of our students, schools, and communities. Her commitment to the education and well-being of our students is a well-deserved acknowledgement.

MCPS Family Engagement Advisory Team (FEAT)

MCPS is committed to improving students’ school experience and academic success and ensuring equitable learning opportunities by engaging families in decision-making and program review. The FEAT provides opportunities for MCPS families to learn about and provide input and feedback on the district’s programs and initiatives, ensuring that family connections are inclusive, individualized, integrated and impactful (from the National PTA “Four Is” framework for Transformative Family Engagement); and create uniform expectations and best practices for individual schools and districtwide decision making.

Team responsibilities include:

Provide input and feedback to MCPS Central Office staff, school staff and work groups on programs, activities, services, resources, and materials, including communication to families, and Parent Academy;
Solicit feedback from other parents in the community;
Participate in efforts to promote a welcoming environment in all schools;
Assist staff with training to strengthen family advocacy skills;
Develop a plan for collaborative learning opportunities for school administrators and teachers to equitably engage with all students and families.

The FEAT is composed of no more than 15 parent/guardians, including individuals and community stakeholders, a school administrator, a teacher, a Parent-Community Coordinator (PCC) and a member of Student and Family Support and Engagement. Note: the term “parent” refers to the parent or legal guardian of a child enrolled in a MCPS. The FEAT meets at least seven times during the school year and members serve a two-year term.

What We Do

Student, Family and School Services, working with schools, families and the community, is dedicated to promoting the shared responsibility and mutual process of engaging families in meaningful and culturally appropriate ways to foster student learning and development.

We work to ensure families have the tools and opportunities to be active and effective partners in their children's school experience; and support schools and community partners in building family-school partnerships to support learning opportunities in the classroom, community, and at home.

Our Vision

We believe that all families, schools, and the community can work together to help students achieve academic proficiency and college and career readiness by:

Welcoming all families into the school community — families are active participants in the school and feel welcomed, respected and connected to what students are learning and doing in the classroom.
Communicating effectively — families and school staff regularly engage in two-way communication.
Advocating for every student — all students are treated fairly and have access to learning opportunities and supports.
Sharing responsibility — families share ideas and concerns for school improvement.
Collaborating with the community — families and students are connected to extended learning opportunities and community services.
