WORKING TITLE: Communications Assistant, OHRD GRADE: 16 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the guidance of the assistant to the associate superintendent, Office of Human Resources and Development (OHRD), supports systemwide communications efforts using web-based, graphic and print materials. Must be able to assist in training department staff and others in the use of communication materials that are computer-based. Exercises considerable initiative to resolve problems and to respond professionally to all queries.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of organizational communications. Excellent interpersonal human relation skills, and oral and written communication skills required. Ability to develop simple, user-friendly forms; training materials; and communication tools that enables the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) message to be disseminated across a large organization. Ability to perform, without direct supervision, continuing assignments requiring the communication needs and provide innovative and effective approaches to improve service to customers. Ability to use resourcefulness and tact, recognizing established precedents and practices, when making decisions and solving problems. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree preferred. Minimum five years of progressively more responsible experience, three of which shall have been in the administrative support class in a school or central office setting. Completion of some college coursework in web publishing/design or business related courses desirable. Training and experience in office computing software applications. Experience developing/updating web pages. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Overtime may be required to meet deadlines with prior management approval.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Creates and evaluates communication strategies to improve services to the OHRD and MCPS staff.
2. Assists with the development and maintenance of OHRD website.
3. Edits articles, publications, and standard communications to be used in MCPS staff notifications.
4. Assists in the development of staff information, including PowerPoint presentations and printed materials.
5. Receives communications from customers and staff, determines nature of business, then, exercises sound judgment and decision-making skills to resolve sensitive matters referring persons to the office that can best address their needs and concerns.
6. Operates computer desktop and other office equipment in the completion of complex and varied information management tasks.
7. Model professionalism, sensitivity, and confidentiality to ensure the best customer service.
8. Supports administrative secretarial staff.
9. Assist the office in the training of pc-based computing concepts and Microsoft Office products.
10. Performs related work as required.
