SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the guidance of the Director of News and Marketing, leads the strategic development and execution of all social content and campaigns to enhance the organization¿s brand, while increasing engagement and traffic and evaluating results. Work includes creating engaging content for distribution across social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), and for other platforms such as the MCPS website and MCPS-TV. This position also assists in determining news coverage; maintaining web pages; writing, editing, reviewing, and modifying communications department content; scriptwriting; and interviewing subjects for a variety of products. Applies creative and artistic judgment and skill in preparing communication materials.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Demonstrated ability to handle intricate communication issues involving multiple audiences, critical deadlines, and complicated logistical planning; deep understanding of social media marketing campaigns, including maintaining brand consistency, identifying appropriate channels for social media efforts, tailoring messaging to each channel¿s audience, tracking the performance of initiatives, and suggesting changes to improve results. Strong ability to write clearly and concisely about complex topics, often under pressure; thorough understanding of English grammar and composition; ability to interact with leaders, constituency groups, staff, and elected officials; and effectively conduct large and small group meetings. Familiarity with web communications, content management systems, emergency communications technologies and trends, and collecting, interpreting and reporting analytics across various platforms. Excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to conform to high journalistic standards and MCPS social media best practices required.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree required, with college coursework in English, communications, journalism, or related field. Master's degree preferred. Minimum of five years of experience using social media tools for a large organization or media outlet and writing in news and features; proven editorial skills including strong language skills and the ability to adjust content to remain consistent with brand voice, style, and tone. Experience using a wide variety of social media tools, photo and video editing software, and web content management and design resources. Other combinations of applicable education, training, certification, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Occasional event coverage for the purposes of posting or creating editorial content that supports the organization's outreach across multiple channels. Occasional evening and weekend events. Some local travel required.

Collaborates with the leadership to develop and implement a broad social media strategy for Montgomery County Public Schools, employing the use of multiple social media tools to share information and engage the community.

Uses online tools, including social media analytics, to evaluate the effectiveness of social media and other communications efforts.

Provides clear, concise written content for both electronic and printed media, adhering to production and editorial calendars and maintaining editorial standards of quality and accuracy.

Regularly updates MCPSs social media presence in accordance with the Department of Communications identified goals and social media strategy.

Works with MCPS leadership to provide social media training and support to district leadership and other staff.

Contributes content, both written and visual, to MCPS internal and external publications and the MCPS website.

Uses content management system to update web pages, including the integration of social media into website content.

Collaborates with MCPS offices on projects, such as community engagement events and annual report.

Provides schools and offices with communications support, including coverage of events and initiatives, as well as emergency and crisis communications, as needed.

Provides assistance and support to news media and the public under the direction of leadership, as needed.

Understands and applies principles of performance evaluation and professional growth standards for employees.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of this position.
