WORKING TITLE: Building Service Worker Community Use of Schools GRADE: 06 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, performs building cleaning, facilities maintenance and plant equipment operations work in schools. Work of the class involves varied building cleaning duties and related facilities and grounds maintenance work. Employees receive on the job training in the application of simple manual skill and use of cleaning and grounds tools and equipment, and supplies to clean interior of buildings and maintain grounds. Nature of work is repetitive and requires sustained physical effort and involves some heavy work in moving or lifting furniture and equipment with some exposure to accident and injury hazards and disagreeable elements. Employees in positions assigned to community use of schools work must possess the appropriate certificate for checking or operating heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment. Employees must work on Saturdays and Sundays to facilitate ICB use of MCPS facilities by user groups. Maintains security of school building during assigned weekend shifts. Employees in these classes are considered emergency personnel and are required to report to buildings during inclement weather.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the methods, materials and practices of building and grounds work; ability to operate and maintain custodial and grounds care equipment; ability to secure a current valid boiler operation certificate and license and to satisfactorily complete in-service training required for this classification; uses personal protective equipment and other safety tools and practices; monitors building spaces and grounds to ensure a safe and secure environment; possesses a basic knowledge of emergency response procedures. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Completion of the ninth grade required. High School or GED diploma preferred. Experience in general cleaning of buildings and grounds. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a boiler certificate indicating proficiency in the safe operation of low pressure boilers.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Sufficient physical strength and freedom from disabling defects to permit the lifting and moving of heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs.) and to perform manual labor.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Location subject to change. Must provide own transportation to different school locations. Must be able to work Saturday and Sunday and one or more shifts during the Monday-Friday period. Must be able to work different hours on each of the assigned work days, as required. Employees are provided uniforms and must wear proper attire.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Cleans and sweeps classrooms, offices, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and other rooms.

2. Empties trash baskets.

3. Dusts furniture, cleans doors, windows and trim.

4. Removes stain from floors, walls, and glass, strips old wax from and applies new wax to floors using hand and power tools.

5. Cleans hallways and stair wells.

6. Wet mops and buffs floors.

7. Cleans lavatories and locker rooms, and replaces towels and other supplies.

8. Washes windows display cases, glass doors, and other fixtures.

9. Cleans and polishes brass, other metal work, and mirrors.

10. Cleans; and maintains terrazzo, tile, carpet and other floor surfaces and baseboards.

11. Cleans and maintains a variety of other surfaces such as ceilings, walls, chalkboards, counter and table tops, lockers, etc.

12. Cleans and maintains rest rooms and locker rooms.

13. Paints as appropriate.

14. Replaces light bulbs.

15. Makes simple minor adjustments and repairs to plumbing, electrical, and other building fixtures.

16. Checks heating and ventilating of building and may replace filters in heating and ventilating units.

17. Monitors buildings and grounds, and observes and reports hazardous or otherwise defective conditions.

18. Operates power mower in cutting lawns and cleans up rubbish from grounds and adjacent areas.

19. Clears snow from walks and parking lots.

20. Delivers incoming supplies and equipment.

21. Assists school staff by making deliveries to classrooms, moving furniture and other heavy objects between rooms and performing other manual or strenuous tasks.

22. Maintains safe and secure building conditions and appearance and safety of grounds.

23. Reports maintenance and supply needs.

24. Maintains security of school building during assigned weekend work shifts.

25. Checks to see that windows and doors are locked and that no unauthorized parties are in the school building.

26. Performs a variety of related work as required.
