Carpentry Assistant Supervisor

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the direction of the supervisor, work with carpenters, glaziers and other skilled and semiskilled employees in a geographical area of the school system in the maintenance, repair, and construction of buildings, structures and fixtures; and performs work requiring advanced knowledge of the carpentry trade. Work of this class involves responsibility for laying out work details, assigning duties and directing the work of carpenters and other building trades workers in a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction activities. Nature of work requires frequent visits to school facilities to inspect projects at various stages of completion. Assignments are received orally or through written work orders and many include blueprints, construction plans, and specifications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of standard methods, materials, and tools of carpentry and related building trades; considerable knowledge of the qualities and uses of various materials employed in commercial construction and repair. Ability to read and work from blueprints and sketches; ability to plan, assign, supervise, and inspect the work of subordinates; ability to complete accurate records, including time and material costs. Skill in the use and care of hand and power tools of the carpentry trade. Good communications skills, excellent human relations skills.Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree preferred. Considerable and varied experience in the performance of skilled carpentry work, including experience in a lead or supervisory capacity required. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland driver's license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to lift moderately heavy objects, complete work requiring moderate physical exertion, and carry out required inspection activities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist in the planning, assignment and supervises the work of carpenters, glaziers, locksmiths, roofers and other skilled and semiskilled personnel in the maintenance and repair of existing facilities and in the construction and installation of new structures and fixtures.

2. Estimates time and material needs; obtains price quotes.

3. Maintains records of job time and materials; maintains purchase records; reviews time records and verifies accuracy.

4. Evaluates work requests and discusses requests with users; recommends approval or disapproval.

5. Prepares drawings of cabinets, bookcases, doors, desks, counters, and other wooden fixtures to be manufactured in the shop; selects lumber, sets up machines and measures and cuts component parts to size; assigns and inspects the work of shop employees engaged in the assembling and repairing of furniture and other wooden fixtures.

6. Makes layouts and sketches for large projects and prepares estimates of materials, time, and labor necessary to complete jobs.

7. Inspects work in progress and upon completion for compliance with departmental standards and good safety practices; ensures proper and timely completion of work orders; makes changes in job plans as needed.

8. Performs the more difficult phases of planning, maintaining, construction and repairing buildings, fixtures and structures.

9. Visits facilities to inspect work, resolve problems, and coordinate work activity.

10. Coordinates work of assign trade with that of workers in other crafts; coordinates the ordering of supplies and equipment; clarifies work order requests from schools and ensures the proper and timely completion of data required on the work order request forms.

11. Performs related work as required.
