SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the ERS tool mechanic, will perform basic repair to the custodial equipment at the Equipment Repair Shop (ERS), helps the tool mechanic in performing skilled work in the maintenance and repair of custodial equipment. Work in this class involves responsibility for performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks in accordance with standard practices. Assignments are received either orally or through written work orders and may be accompanied by diagrams or sketches. Work is generally performed under supervision and subject to inspection for compliance with instructions and conformance with accepted safety standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of standard methods, materials, and tools used in the repair of custodial equipment common to school use; working knowledge of applicable electrical codes .Ability to read, write, and prepare reports; working knowledge of common office desktop software such as MS Access and department software Maximo; basic knowledge of electrical codes and ability to read electrical wiring diagrams to help in the repair or maintenance of the different custodial equipment used in the schools. Knowledge in the use and care of hand and power tools of the trade. Good human relations and communications skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Experience in the maintenance and repair of custodial equipment. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland class C driver's license, or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring occasional moderate physical exertion and lifting/moving of moderately heavy objects. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) None

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Checks, adjusts, repairs and maintains in good working order all custodial equipment used in the school system, including but not limited to buffers, scrubbers, vacuums, shampooers, wet/dry vacuums (pick-up machines).
2. Does the initial troubleshooting at the schools / site to determine if the repair needed is a simple one (change of batteries, new power cord) and it can be done on site or the equipment needs to move to the ERS.
3. Assists the tool mechanic with the repairs and diagnostic of the custodial equipment in the ERS
4. Assist the tool mechanic with the inventory control of spare parts.
5. Salvages parts from equipment that has been marked for replacement by the tool mechanic or the DFM financial team
6. Assists the tool mechanic in identifying equipment that has been abused and assist the tool mechanic with the reports
7. Pick-up and delivery of custodial equipment from/to school/site
8. Sweeps repair facility, helps with the general maintenance and upkeep of the ERS
9. Serves as the back-up to the tool mechanic in the absence of him/her, by logging the work requests and informing the tool mechanic of what is needed upon his/her return.
10. Performs related work as required.
