Auto Parts Assistant (Shift 3)

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the supervision of the Automotive Repair Supervisor or Automotive Parts Supervisor, communicates with vehicle operators for repair information, prepares and generates vehicle work orders, assist in dispatching service and tow vehicles. Routinely orders, receives, stores, and issues parts for vehicle and equipment repair from a centralized storeroom and is accountable for properly receiving, reviewing, and issuing a wide variety of requisitions, purchase orders, and automotive parts and supplies. Performs general organizing of parts department. Keeps track of warranties and recalls on all equipment and parts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Extensive knowledge of a variety of parts, equipment, tools, materials, and supplies used in the automotive trade. Knowledge of storeroom methods and procedures, including inventory record-keeping, and purchase and requisition procedures. Familiarity with computerized inventory systems are required. Ability to accurately maintain inventory and stock control records and to prepare reports; ability to determine quality of goods against prescribed specifications. Ability to operate automated fleet system. Ability to maintain clerical records; ability to check, verify, and compile data. Skill in the operation of a computer and two-way radio. Good oral and written communications, and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Experience in performing general clerical work. Experience in the ordering, receipt, storage and issuance of equipment and supplies. Some experience in the servicing and maintenance of automotive vehicles and equipment desired. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland state noncommercial Class C driver's license or equivalent. Ability to secure a Maryland state commercial Class B driver's license or equivalent, with air brake and passenger/cargo endorsements within six (6) months of employment. Ability to obtain forklifter operator certification.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing. Sufficient physical strength and stamina to lift objects up to 100 lbs., stand for extended periods of time, and complete work requiring considerable physical exertion. Exposure to inclement weather possible.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Some overtime work may be required. Flexibility to work different shifts as needed.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for issuing parts to mechanics for specific jobs and/or vehicles. Monitors stock levels and reorders as needed.

Consults with Repair Supervisor or Parts Supervisor to determine correct spare parts which will be needed and then obtains these items for stock; as required

Operates computer to enter data and maintain computerized office or unit records, for example: enters vehicle repair information and generates work orders; issues order numbers and customer copies of work orders; creates schedules; and retrieves bus history data.

Creates reports in Excel, Word, Access, and the fleet maintenance management system (FASTER). Able to access and understand Maximo for vehicle history.

Checks and verifies data, for example: part numbers and hours worked on repair orders and calculates labor time; checks vehicle component replacement records; checks vendor invoices for accuracy.

Operates photocopy machine and other office devices.

Answers telephones, two-way radios, and takes messages; responds to inquires regarding unit services; greets and directs visitors.

Telephones and arranges pickup and delivery of vehicles from outside vendors and other depots. Contacts and advises vehicle operators on two-way radios.

Maintains computerized data by accessing database system; entering, verifying, updating, and retrieving data.

Performs related work as required.
