Welcome to the 2018–2019 School Year!

Welcome Video

Dear MCPS Community:

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!

The staff of Montgomery County Public Schools has spent the summer preparing for this school year. We have been hiring staff, cleaning and preparing buildings, participating in trainings, purchasing supplies, reviewing and implementing safety procedures, and planning lessons. We do these things as we work to fulfill our core purpose of preparing all students to thrive in their futures.

I firmly believe that to have successful classrooms and schools, we must include the elements of science, art and heart in our teaching. Science informs our teaching by using learning research, achievement data, and the growing body of knowledge about minds and brains. Artful teaching stimulates our senses and captures our minds; it generates enthusiasm for learning. Heart helps us build relationships with students and families; it shows our commitment, caring, compassion and concern. These three elements—together—are essential to student success.

Our school system has a long history of high levels of success for many students, but not all. We can change this. This year, MCPS continues its work toward excellence for all by expanding access and opportunity for our students to help them unleash their potential and achieve at the highest levels.

I recently read a quote by author Andy Andrews that struck me: “When confronted with a challenge, the committed heart will search for a solution.”

We are fortunate to have so many staff and community members with committed hearts and a dedication to our students. Together, I am confident that we can achieve our core purpose so that all truly does mean all in Montgomery County.

I look forward to a wonderful school year!

Sincerely,

Jack R. Smith, Ph.D.
Superintendent of Schools
