Impact of Full-day Prekindergarten Program on Student Academic Performance

Description:

The findings show that the additional instructional time in Head Start full-day classes has contributed to greater academic achievement in reading. Gains are significantly larger for female and Hispanic students, and students receiving English for Speakers of Other Languages services.

Recommendations:

  • Expand Head Start half-day classes to Head Start full-day classes in Title I schools, if financially feasible.
  • Examine and share best practices in schools with the greatest pre-K achievement growth.
