Schools across Montgomery County kicked off Mental Health Awareness Week with a variety of activities for students, staff and the community. Schools have taken mindfulness breaks and written kind notes to themselves and to each other. Students at Stonegate Elementary took yoga breaks while William Tyler Page Elementary students practiced controlled breathing by blowing bubbles. They’ve focused on gratitude, told jokes, played sports and created art. There were therapy dogs and bunnies to pet and snuggle. Watch the video of various events and activities around the district.

Districtwide events are coming up as well—the Waymaking Special on Student Mental Health is from 6–8 p.m. tonight Nov. 1, at Richard Montgomery High School. Former professional football player turned mental health expert and advocate, Dr. Jay Barnett, will speak in-person to students about the importance of mental health, breaking down stigma and seeking help. This event will also be livestreamed on the MCPS-TV and on MCPS en Español YouTube channels.
