Students Donate Computer Lab to the Potomac Chinese School
The Network Operations program of the Montgomery County Students Information Technology Foundation, Inc. (ITF) held its annual computer lab gifting ceremony today (Nov. 16) at Thomas Edison High School of Technology.
This year’s recipient is the Potomac Chinese School, an organization focused on providing rigorous and educational experiences for K-12 students in Chinese communities throughout Montgomery County. The Potomac Chinese School plans to supplement its current curriculum and culture classes with computers and enhance computer programming instruction. The computer lab will also be utilized to help Chinese immigrants learn English and help with the American Chinese School’s mission to, “serve the community, promote Chinese culture and cultivate outstanding Chinese descendants who can adapt to American and Chinese societies.”
ITF students at Edison High School reconditioned six computers with operating systems, monitors, keyboards, mice and a printer. This project provides an opportunity for the ITF students to practice computer maintenance skills, earn student service learning hours and develop an appreciation for charity and community involvement.
The ITF is a non-profit organization established cooperatively by the Montgomery County business community and MCPS. It provides hands-on training for high school students to earn valuable computer certifications that will prepare them for higher education opportunities or direct entry into the information technology job market.
More Good News: Northwood Athletics Earns National Honors
Marco Fuggitti, athletics specialist at Northwood High School, and the school’s athletic department staff, have been recognized by the National Federation of State High School Associations for achieving Level 3 status in the NFHS School Honor Roll Program. Northwood is one of 22 schools in the nation to receive this honor. To be eligible for Level 3, all head and assistant coaches must have completed professional development courses on sportsmanship; bullying and hazing; strength and conditioning; teaching and modeling behavior; and engaging effectively with parents.
Poolesville Wins State Sportsmanship Award
The Poolesville High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams, along with coaches Gerard Prasad and Peter Diak, won the prestigious Al Smith State Sportsmanship Award. Smith was a fixture on the Maryland high school running scene for years prior to his death in 2023.
Celebrating More Athletics Championships
The Damascus High School cheerleading team (under the direction of coach Lindsay Burns) won the 2A state cheerleading championship.
Albert Einstein High School (under the direction of coach Eric DaSilva) led the boys’ cross country team to a 4A state cross country championship. Winston Churchill High School finished as 4A state finalists. MCPS teams earned four of the top five spots (Walt Whitman earned third and Northwood came in fifth.)
Walter Johnson High School (under the direction of coach Tom Martin) led the girls’ cross country team to the 4A state cross country championship. MCPS teams earned four of the top five spots in that competition (Bethesda-Chevy Chase earned third; Walt Whitman came in fourth and Richard Montgomery placed fifth).
