Dr. Cara D. Grant, supervisor of Pre-K–12 health and physical education, and Dr. Troy E. Boddy, retired director in the Equity Initiatives Unit, have co-written a book, Intersectionality in Health Education. The book “seeks to prompt meaningful reflection on the current status of health education and to ultimately result in more equitable practices for all students. It will help health educators identify their implicit biases, examine how intersectionality is affecting Black students, and build classrooms where all students are seen and valued.”

Grant is a board member for the Society of Health and Physical Educators of Maryland (SHAPE Maryland) and serves as the chair for the Maryland State Department of Education Advisory Council on Health and Physical Education. She also serves on SHAPE America’s board of directors and is the SHAPE America president-elect. Boddy is the co-founder of the Building Our Network of Diversity (BOND) Project, and is president of the East Coast Racial Equity Group, which provides consulting services to companies, schools and community organizations on addressing equity and creating equitable workplaces.

Students learned the basics of the sport, including stickhandling, passing and shooting. Jennifer Rushin, a physical education content specialist at MCPS, said the opportunity allowed students to practice skills and concepts learned in class. Students were able to get a feel for the sport with some one-on-one guidance with the clinic's supervisors.
