Sligo Middle School held its annual Career Day on March 1, inviting about 25 speakers in from a variety of fields to speak to its students throughout the day.

Careers represented included: medicine, journalism, engineering, defense, architecture, education, law enforcement (K-9 unit), finance, automotive and AmeriCorps.

Frost MS Student Selected for Prestigious Orchestra Camp

Jonathan Henderson, an eighth grader at Robert Frost Middle School, was accepted for an international orchestra summer camp and will perform at Carnegie Hall. During the program, which is free and will run from July 20-Aug. 8, he will work closely with top players from American orchestras and conservatories for intensive training and performance opportunities. Jonathan began learning a string instrument a little more than a year ago during a CARES Act-funded summer school program. He now plays the viola in Orchestra 3 and the clarinet in Band 3, and was selected for this year's All-State Orchestra.

Celebrating Black History Month at Rocky Hill MS

Rocky Hill Middle School held a Black History Month event on Feb. 22 that highlighted the golden years of Black Wall Street. Parents and students shared a meal, explored vendors and enjoyed performances, including dancing, singing and student artwork.

Winners Named in First Youth Anti-Racist Film Festival

The first Youth Anti-Racist Film Festival named its top three documentaries last month. The event, hosted by the Minority Scholars Program, took place last month at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center. MCPS students delivered powerful films with messages that made it clear: there is no room for racism in the classroom. Twelve films were presented at the festival; there were more than 100 people in attendance. Read more.

Galway Students Study Engineering and the Environment

Galway Elementary School recently held its first ever Engineering Earth Fair Day. The schoolwide, all-day event gave students a chance to apply their engineering skills to environmental challenges, while celebrating all things Earth.
