REACH hub 3.jpg

MCPS hosted nearly 1,000 volunteers, lawmakers and county leaders on April 22 for the Resilience, Education, Action, Climate, Habitat (REACH) Hub groundbreaking ceremony and Earth Day volunteer event at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School. Hundreds of middle and high school students, along with MCPS staff and volunteers from Habitat for Humanity, spent time building portions of the farm, rehabbing a courtyard garden, and planting bio retentions at the middle school and nearby Weller Road Elementary School. Check out the Flickr gallery from the event.

The REACH Hub at Loiederman is being developed by MCPS in partnership with the Charles Koiner Conservancy for Urban Farming, a nonprofit land trust, which is dedicated to creating and supporting neighborhood farms that provide educational opportunities, improve food security, build community connections and promote land conservation. Through support from Montgomery County Green Bank’s Technical Assistance Program, site designs are being developed by MCPS to increase the Hub's resilience. Watch a video from the event.

Grade 9 Students Experience In-Person and Virtual College Tours This Spring

good news, college tour experience.jpg

The College Tour experience provided close to 7,000 ninth grade students early exposure to college as a post-secondary option, helping them to refine their preferences and learn more about college life, programs and admissions.

The MCPS Career Advising Team established partnerships with 13 regional colleges and universities (the University of Maryland, College Park, Morgan State University, McDaniel College, Stevenson University and the Universities at Shady Grove, among them) to offer in-person visits to their campuses in February, March and April. High schools were matched with an in-person college visit opportunity. To date, more than 2,000 students have participated in a college tour experience.

The Virtual College Tour Platform is accessible to all students via myMCPS classroom with an enrollment link provided by the high school. For each of the featured colleges on the platform, there is a page that highlights fast facts on enrollment, location, tuition, fees and other facts. Students can then explore virtually, with a 360-degree walk through of campus and key facilities.
