A Crowning Achievement

More than 12,000 Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students started receiving their high school diplomas during commencement ceremonies today (May 29) from Montgomery Blair High School.
Graduations continue through the week for Damascus, Paint Branch, Wheaton, Winston Churchill, Poolesville, Quince Orchard and Thomas S. Wootton high schools, and the John L. Gildner Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (RICA).
Ceremonies are taking place on individual high school campuses, at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., and on the campuses of Mount St. Mary’s University and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. They feature an array of speakers, including the White House press secretary, an NBA coach, educators, authors, politicians, businesspeople, MCPS staff members and alumni.
More than 2,000 students—2,085, to be exact—are earning the Seal of Biliteracy this year. The Seal of iliteracy is an award given to high school graduates who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in one or more languages other than English. Eighty graduating seniors have earned it in multiple languages. This year’s students tested in 54 different languages.
