Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) continued its commitment to supporting families during recent weather closures by distributing grab-and-go meals at 18 locations across the county. As part of MCPS’ emergency weather procedures, these meals were available to children 18 and under, regardless of their enrollment in the school district. Meals were also available for pickup by parents and guardians.

On Tuesday, Jan. 7, approximately 3,500 meals were distributed, and on Wednesday, Jan. 8, around 4,000 meals were provided. Each meal included an entrée (grain/protein), fruit, vegetable and milk, along with reheating instructions for families to enjoy the meals at home. Menu items included French toast sticks with sausage, carrots, grilled cheese, apples, roasted chickpeas, craisins and milk.

“Despite the harsh weather conditions, the dedicated teams on the ground were real troopers,” said Elizabeth Leach, director of the Division of Food and Nutrition Services (DFNS). “The wind was whipping around, but nothing could stop our staff from ensuring our community had access to healthy meals.”

Among the busiest of the meal distribution sites, Arcola Elementary School served over 600 meals before running out of food. While final data will be collected once normal operations resume, DFNS estimates each site served at least 200 meals.
