Maryland State SMOB Finalist - MASC Winter Leadership Conference
Zaria Naqvi, a junior at Winston Churchill High School, has been selected as one of two finalists for the Student Member of the Maryland State Board of Education. The other finalist is from Crossland High School in Prince George’s County.
The election was held Jan. 25 at the first ever Winter Leadership Conference of the Maryland Association of Student Councils, and was hosted by the Montgomery County Regional Student Government Association and the Walter Johnson High School Student Government Association. Student leaders from across the state gathered for development workshops and assemblies to discuss youth stances on upcoming Maryland legislation, as well as participate in the election of the two finalists. MCPS Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor and Dr. Joshua Michaels, president of the State Board of Education, also greeted students and offered words of encouragement.
In April, Governor Wes Moore will select the Student Member who will serve on the Maryland Board of Education for the 2025-2026 school year.
