Emily Callaghan, a social worker at Montgomery Blair High School, was recently honored with the Martin Luther King (MLK) Peacemaker Award for her exceptional work in fostering a supportive environment for students. The award, presented by the Montgomery County Street Outreach Network (SON), recognizes individuals who contribute to peacemaking efforts and community improvement.

Callaghan plays a critical role in helping students navigate personal and academic challenges. From addressing mental health concerns to providing crisis intervention, her work is centered around making students feel seen, heard and supported.

“Emily is an incredible resource for our students,” said Blair Principal Kevin Yates. “She has created so many meaningful relationships with our students and their families. We are so fortunate to have her as part of our team.”

What sets Callaghan apart is her ability to build deep connections with students from all walks of life, particularly within the Latino and immigrant communities. Although she was born in the U.S., her parents immigrated from El Salvador, and Callaghan understands firsthand the challenges that many of her students face. Her experience growing up in a family that navigated these struggles allows her to relate to students who encounter similar barriers.

A Blair alumna, Callaghan is passionate about creating spaces where students feel valued and understood. "I strive to be a constant source of support for students," she said. "Whether it’s helping them through a tough moment or guiding them toward a brighter future, my goal is to make sure they know they are not alone."
