MCPS Students Win Big at SkillsUSA Regional Challenge During Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month
Dozens of MCPS students showed off their skills and expertise at a SkillsUSA regional competition held at Thomas Edison High School of Technology on Feb. 13. All had advanced from their local competitions, and the winners are moving on to compete at the state level in March. MCPS placed first, second and third in nine of the 10 competitions.
SkillsUSA is a national workforce development organization that helps students prepare for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations. Through integrated curriculum and partnerships with industry professionals, students are empowered to become skilled professionals, career-ready leaders and responsible community members.
During the three-hour competition, students from MCPS and Prince George’s County Public Schools participated in different skills contests—from carpentry and automotive maintenance to IT services and architecture. Judges awarded points across a variety of categories and competencies.
Jack Hoefling, a senior representing Edison who placed second in the Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair category, said that an advantage of competitions like SkillsUSA is getting to demonstrate their abilities in front of industry leaders. “The people that come and judge me are people that run dealerships as managers and foremen, and you want to leave a good impression on them. Competitions like this can really help your future, and help with scholarships.”
Susie Masi, a senior in Edison’s Academy of Health Professions who plans to pursue a career in nursing, credits her courses and SkillsUSA for preparing her for the future in the growing field. “Being in the Academy of Health Professions and participating in SkillsUSA has helped me build on these skills and learn a little bit more about my pathway,” she said.
