The energy was high and the competition fierce at the 28th Annual Pompons County Competition on Feb. 1 at Montgomery Blair High School. Teams from all 25 MCPS high schools filled the gym with cheering, jumping and dancing, showcasing their talent and school spirit.

In Division I, Damascus High School claimed first place, securing its fourth county title in school history. Sherwood High School, the defending champion, finished in second place, just behind Damascus. The last time Damascus won Division I was during the 2015-2016 season.

“Honestly, it feels a little bit surreal. The last time that Damascus got first at the county championship was when one of my co-coaches and I were on the team together my senior year (back in 2016). There are so many talented teams in Division I, so it truly is a testament to how hard these girls have worked all season,” said Brianna Nelson, head coach at Damascus High School.

Bradley W. Rohner, principal of Damascus High School, also expressed his excitement about the victory. “I was thrilled to celebrate our Poms incredible victory at the county competition,” he said. “It was wonderful to see their hard work, dedication and school spirit recognized with winning first place. Their performance’s energy, excitement and sheer perfection were a testament to the countless hours of effort they put in.”

In Division II, Clarksburg High School claimed the top spot after finishing second last year. This is Clarksburg’s second Division II title, having previously won in 2006-2007. The team’s determination was evident as they executed a flawless routine.

“We are incredibly proud of the team for their hard work, dedication and perseverance this season! This milestone is a reflection of our commitment to excellence and building a program that will make the Clarksburg community proud!” said Shaneil Turnbull, head coach at Clarksburg High School.

Seneca Valley High School defended its title in Division III, continuing its dominance after a victory last year. Coach Jasmine L. Jones shared her pride in the team: “They already know they are my extended children. I love them with every ounce of my being. I know they can do whatever they set their mind to. I believe in them more than anything.”
