On March 4, the Supreme Court of Maryland convened at Montgomery College, where over 320 MCPS students observed oral arguments.

The event, which was also accessible via livestream, included students from the Justice, Law and Society CTE program at Springbrook, Blair, Northwood and Quince Orchard High Schools, as well as the Law Enforcement & Leadership CTE program at Edison and Seneca Valley High Schools.

“Learning and experiencing how the Supreme Court works opens up the path to understanding how the law works in our country,” said MCPS Superintendent Thomas Taylor. “We are creating learning experiences that will not only guide them when they make their professional choices but also guide them when they become eligible to vote and function as active members of American society.”

Following the arguments, the justices participated in a question-and-answer session with students, addressing topics such as judicial procedures, their individual paths to the bench, and educational recommendations for aspiring legal professionals.

The Supreme Court of Maryland conducts oral arguments at secondary or post-secondary educational institutions twice annually, and this event marked the beginning of the third year of this initiative outside of Annapolis.
