In honor of International Women’s Day, MCPS and MoCo EmpowHER hosted the second annual EmpowHERed Leaders’ Summit on March 7 at the Universities at Shady Grove. Two hundred female and non-binary students gathered to hear MCPS student leaders share inspiring journeys in fields, including literature, athletics, performance, activism and business. Student presenters included:

  • Tracy Espinoza (Watkins Mill High School), vice president of students, Fan of Asylum and Immigration Reform (F.A.I.R).
  • Manmitha Jinasean (Seneca Valley High School), silver medalist, USA Karate Nationals.
  • Sabor Latino (Gaithersburg High School), Latin dance team member.
  • Katie Musick (Quince Orchard High School), singer and guitarist.
  • Maya Mourshed (Francis Scott Key Middle School), author of Chemistories.
  • Chloe Ayissi-Etoh (Thomas S. Wootton High School), business owner and fashion designer.

For many students, it was their first visit to a college campus. After a welcome from Dr. Anne Khademian, executive director at The Universities at Shady Grove, students enjoyed a day of learning, connection, and inspiration, leaving with fresh knowledge and new friendships. The event was supported by the Montgomery County Educational Foundation, The Universities at Shady Grove, Staples, Kemor Contracting and community donors.

MoCo EmpowHER works to create a safe space for open dialogue about women’s issues and provide leadership development opportunities for young women. Liliana Katz-Hollander, a senior at Richard Montgomery (RM) High School and co-chair of MoCo EmpowerHER, was recently honored with the Women Making History Award.
