The Department of Health and Human Services, School Health Services (SHS) in partnership with MCPS provides services to assure students' health, safety, and well-being at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School.
School Health Services include assessment of the health needs of students, sick and emergency care and first aid, monitoring immunization compliance, administering medications and treatments to students (with proper physician orders) maintaining student health records, providing crisis intervention, health counseling, health education-promotion, nurse case-management, and referral. School Health staff assists families of eligible uninsured students to enroll in the Maryland Children's Health and Care for Kids
programs.
IMPORTANT:
When your child is sick, please keep them home from school. This benefits your child and other children and staff at B-CC HS. Students with a fever of 100 or greater orally will be excluded from school at the discretion of SHS and MCPS staff.
The most effective way to prevent the spread of germs and avoid getting sick is through regular handwashing. Parents, please emphasize to your children the importance of handwashing after using the restroom, before eating, and/or if your hands are visibly soiled.
Should your student need to keep medication in the health room or self-carry emergency medication, please note the following:
MCDHHS and MCPS staff will not provide or administer any medication, including Over-the-Counter (OTC) medications such as aspirin or acetaminophen, to an MCPS student without an authorized prescriber’s order (form #525-13) AND authorization by parent or guardian This is following the Maryland Nurse Practice Act, COMAR, Maryland State School Health Services Guidelines and the policies and procedures developed jointly by Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (MCDHHS) and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).
Authorization to Administer Medication, form #525-13 can be found here or picked up from the health room.
Prescription medications must be provided in a container with the pharmacist's label attached and must include the student’s name, medication, dosage, route of administration, times to be administered, and expiration date.
OTC medication must be in the original container with the manufacturer’s label the safety seal intact and a visible expiration date. Per MCPS policy, the health room will not administer any expired medications.
Students may "self-carry" emergency medications such as Epi-pens and inhalers with a physician’s order and approval by the School Community Health Nurse. It must be determined by the school nurse whether a student who self-administers medication is responsible to self-carry their medication. The developmental ability of the student, the need to have ready access to emergency medication and the safe storage of medication must be taken into account when making the decision.
For the safety of your student, as well as other students at school, all medications should be delivered to the school by a parent, guardian, or designated adult.
As always, please feel free to contact the health room with any questions or concerns.
