Essay for New Students
(A day in the life of a BFES student)
Where Eagles Soar With Pride
Are you a new student at Beverly Farms? If you are, you might be nervous about starting school here. But it’s really not that big of a deal. Sure, Beverly Farms is different, (in a good way) but people who go here would not call it different. Beverly Farm’s students would call it special. Now, you might be wondering about a day in the life of a Beverly Farms student.
We’ll start with what it feels like on the first day. Usually, you feel nervous and have the first-day jitters. In my first-day experiences, I feel nervous but also excited to see old friends, but also to make new friends. Also to see my new teacher. It may feel nerve-racking at first, but once you get the feel of it, it’s an everyday thing. Luckily, though, Beverly Farms offers a buddy system - that is, a buddy from your class for new students that shows you around the school and helps you out. The buddy system! Pretty cool, huh? If you are in Kindergarten, you will have a patrol to help you through the day (that means you get your own 5th grade helper).
I think you’ve pretty much gotten the point of how the school works, but we’ll go over that anyway. On a daily basis, it’s pretty much the same. (With the exception of early releases and delays). Classes usually start with Morning announcements. In the morning announcements they will say the school promise “No Place for Hate” and in February we get interesting information about the African- Americans for Black History Month. The morning announcements make everyone feel welcome with a kind greeting, and an interesting quote from a famous person, the Pledge Of Allegiance, birthdays, and a nice ending such as “Have an marvelous Monday!”. (And occasionally, an announcement from a teacher). There is a different procedure of the day for each grade, but we will write the 4th grade procedure (because that is the grade Ahana and I are in). After the morning announcements, we go to math for an hour (9:20-10:20). Aftermath, our teacher reads us a book, or we build reading stamina until 10:45 when recess starts. After recess, (which ends at 11:30) we eat lunch until 12:00. After lunch, we have Sacred Writing Time (S.W.T.). This is 10 minutes of pure writing in our S.W.T notebooks. On Fridays, we get to share the stories, and if you want to, you can share with a partner. We have so many people in our class who love to share such interesting stories. S.W.T is from 12:00 to 12:10. (Except on Fridays because we get to share). The purpose of SWT is to get creativity to blossom from writing fun stories. After S.W.T, we do writing until 1:40, then reading until 2:30 (and occasionally, we do Science/ Social Studies). After reading, we go to specials from 2:40-3:25 when dismissal starts. Now that you know about how BFES works, you can learn a little about our kindness campaigns and schoolwide art projects.

Buddy System Essay
For kids who are worried because they are new, it’s really nothing to worry about. You will always have a buddy with you. If you think you won’t make new friends, you're wrong, because you will have a buddy to be with you, to tell you what you are supposed to do during class time, and to introduce you to new people. If your child is worried that they will have no one to play with it’s okay, because your child's buddy will play with them.
The main reason we have the buddy system is to get your child to be motivated. Robin Cooper (our guidance counselor) will invite your child for a new student lunch and she will assign you a buddy for his/her first day. When your child is used to BFES and doesn’t need a buddy with them anymore, that’s okay. We are sure that your child and his/her buddy will be lifelong friends, just as BFES encourages.
Beverly Farms is a school for kindness
and kids who love to learn!
Patrol Essay
In case you are worried about your child coming home safely, we have patrols. Patrols are meant to keep your child safe. We have bus patrols, who take kindergarteners to their bus, Walker patrols (both Victory Lane and Seven Socks Rd), after school activity patrols, and any other route. Patrols mainly walk the kindergartners, but if your child needs any help or assistance, you can talk to Mr.Purgason, the head of patrols/P.E. teacher.
A patrol’s purpose is to make sure all kids of the same and other grades are safe. They will help other kids out, as well as following the rules themselves. Mr.Purgason chooses 5th graders to be patrols, and also to go to patrol camp (a sleep-away for MCPS patrols that is a week long). Mr.Purgason also chooses sub-patrols from 4th grade who are patrols in someone else’s absence.
Kindness Campaign/
School Wide Art Projects
Kindness Campaign
Kindness campaigns are school wide events that show kindness to everyone. Currently, our school is doing a program called “No Place For Hate”. We are also doing “kindness crayons”, which are colored paper crayons that we hang up around the school. Acts of kindness are written by students of all grades of which they did. Each grade has one of the rainbow colors- red for kindergarten, orange for first grade, yellow for second grade, etc. Kindness crayons are a very fun way to spread kindness. For example, when my friend Julie had a broken leg, I decided to help her hold her stuff and put her chair up and down. That is one way you can earn a kindness crayon. Another way to get a kindness crayon is if you help a friend solve their problems. For instance, if my other friend Lily was having a problem in math and I was allowed to help her, I’d give her a boost to make her more confident.
Schoolwide Art Projects
We also do art projects and put them up around the school. Every year the school does the art project with a professional artist. For example, when Ahana and I were in kindergarten, the school made an eagle. The way we made it is that there were paper circles cut out, enough for every person in the school to have one. We would draw on them with color pencils and then glue them onto a ginormous canvas, which was then painted and hung onto a wall near the cafeteria. We most recently made a painting that everyone contributed to. There were animals and they each held a letter so that it spelled “community”. Our school hasn’t yet made our project for this year, but I think that we will do it soon. The students in our school always get excited about it because it only comes around once a year, and the art project is also fun!
I think you’ve heard enough about our school’s kindness campaigns and art projects, so now you can hear a bit more about Beverly Farms mission for not only students, but the student’s love of learning.
