School Hours
Students should come to school no sooner than 9:10 a.m. There will not be any supervision for students before 9:10 a.m. They will be dismissed at 3:50 p.m.. Early Dismissal will be at 1:20. Click here for a detailed school day schedule.
Breakfast
We are fortunate to have the breakfast program here at Burtonsville. Every student will receive a free breakfast in the classroom every single day. Some students eat at home and still have something when they come to school. Others eat at home and decline breakfast. Please talk with your child about what works for your family.
Lunch
Lunch and/or milk will be served in the cafeteria. The daily cost of a school lunch for the current school year is $2.55. Burtonsville Elementary participates in the SNAP (Student Nutrition Accountability Program) lunch program. Checks should be made payable to the Burtonsville Elementary School Cafeteria. Menus will be distributed monthly to students and can also be downloaded at the MCPS lunch page.
Recess
Students will have recess outdoors unless it is raining or the temperature is below 32 Degrees. During inclement weather, students will have recess indoors. They should dress accordingly on days when the weather is windy or cold. All students are expected to go outside on "outdoor recess" days. Students will not have recess on early dismissal days.
Conferences and Report Cards
Two half days are devoted to parent/teacher conferences each November. Teachers ask that parents sign up for a conference time and call to reschedule if they are unable to make their appointment. Parents are welcome to confer with their child's teacher or to observe activities in their child's classroom throughout the year. Conferences and observations must be arranged with the teacher a minimum of one day in advance.
Kindergarten report cards are distributed twice each year, February and June. Report cards for Grades 1 through 5 are distributed four times each year in nine week cycles - November, February, April, and June.
Information about report cards can be found on the MCPS Grading and Reporting page.
Transportation
STUDENTS SHOULD NOT ARRIVE AT SCHOOL BEFORE 9:20 a.m. Students who arrive to school late (after 9:25 a.m.) should be brought into the school office and signed-in by their parent(s). Tardy students who are not signed-in may be marked absent.
Parents who drop off and/or pick up students should do so at the designated school entrance which is located at the west side of the school. NO CARS ARE ALLOWED IN THE BUS CIRCLE (DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL) FOR OBVIOUS SAFETY REASONS.
Once students have arrived at school, they will be released only to their parents or legal guardians. All students leaving school before the end of the school day must be signed out in the office by their parents. If parents want their child to be picked up at school at any time by anyone else, including siblings and grandparents, the parents must send a note to the school stating their wishes and the name of the person who will pick up the child. The person picking up the child should bring picture identification with them to the school office.
All Burtonsville students who are bused to school are picked up at designated bus stops no more than one mile from their home. Parents are responsible for maintaining discipline and safety at bus stops. Inclement weather, traffic accidents, and road construction can cause delays in the bus routes, so the pick-up and drop-off times of each bus may vary somewhat from day to day.
Students will not be allowed to ride any bus other than their regularly assigned bus without a written request from their parents and unless permission is obtained from the bus driver at least 24 hours ahead of time. Some of the buses are filled to capacity and cannot take extra riders. Students must follow the bus driver's rules and directions at all times.
For your child's own safety, we must have a note from you pertaining to after school arrangements. Students may not change their own dismissal schedule without parental permission.
Questions about the buses, bus stops, or bus routes should be directed to the Field Transportation Office at 301-989-1061 or 301-989-1065.
Emergency School Closings and Early Dismissals
There are a number of half-day dismissals for teacher training, parent conferences etc. These dates will be sent home via newsletters and posted on this website. In addition, school is occasionally dismissed early due to adverse weather conditions or mechanical failure (electricity, water) at the school. Students should know where they are to go without having to call home if school is dismissed early for any reason.
Information concerning school closings, late openings, or early dismissals during times when mechanical problems arise at the school or inclement weather threatens our area will be announced promptly on local area radio and television stations, as soon as this information becomes available. Please do not call the school for this information. Winter weather emergency procedures for Montgomery County Public Schools can be viewed by clicking here.
