Opportunity to host International Exchange Student |
![]() |
The Center for Cultural Interchange (CCI) is searching for some great College Gardens ES families who are interested in hosting international high school exchange students for the 2012-2013 school year. Our students come from 65 different countries, and CCI works hard to match students and families based on shared interests and activities to help ease the transition. Families provide meals, a bed and local transportation for their student, who would attend the local public high school full-time. This is an excellent opportunity for all College Gardens families, perhaps especially for those involved in the Chinese immersion program, to participate in a rewarding cultural exchange experience. CCI's local representative, Katy Rene, a former MCPS school teacher, is available to provide more information about becoming a host family. Ms. Rene has placed other students in MCPS schools and is involved throughout the year-long exchange process as a support to students, host families, and schools. She can be reached directly at (215) 896-6486 or kathrynseager@yahoo.com. For more information about CCI and its programs, please visit www.cci-exchange.org.

In these challenging economic times, the PTA Board voted to not to sell Sally Foster this year in order to give families a break from buying and selling to raise money. Unfortunately, by not having a products sale, the PTA may run short on funds for programs this year.
Year after year, through your financial support, the PTA is proud to provide several enriching activities and resources that support our school and our children, including:
Cultural Arts Assemblies four times a year ($4000)
Additional supplies and Fine Arts materials for teachers not provided by the county ($2800)
Cultural Heritage Night, Science Fair Expo, and Art Show ($1900)
Field Day and the 5th Grade Moving On Ceremony ($1600)
So, instead of asking families to buy and sell products such as wrapping paper, cookie dough, or candles, the PTA Board would like to ask for your support through direct donations; where 100% of your donation will go to support our school and our children. Simply send in a check to the: CGES PTA (memo field: donation) to partner with us, without having to sell products. You can even make a donation to the PTA on-line through our PayPal account. Not only will 100% of your contribution go to help meet the needs of our children, but it's tax deductible as well.
Thank you so much for your ongoing financial support.

"Becoming International" by Niki Singh © 2002 |

What makes a school "international"? Is it an international body of students? The teaching of one or more "foreign" languages? A foreign exchange program? A curriculum that includes the study of different cultures? The display of flags of different countries? A cafeteria that serves foods of different cultures? In fact, these are not the defining characteristics of an international school. (read full article)

Help CGES PTA earn money for FREE! |
![]() |
Goodsearch is an opportunity for the PTA to easily raise money. Money is earned through internet searches on www.goodsearch.com. The individual need only enter College Gardens Elementary School PTA in the charity location and hit verification. One penny per search is earned from the advertising dollars that websites receive. Additional money can be earned by shopping on-line at the Gap, e-bay, amazon and many other stores through this site. Checks are issued once a year in December, only if the charity has raised a minimum of $20.00. Many schools and PTAs are already utilizing this fundraising technique.
New Line-Up of Parent Academy Workshops |
![]() |
MCPS will present more than a dozen new Parent Academy workshops between now and March. Don't miss sessions on college and career preparation, understanding ADHD and helping children stay safe on the Internet. In other workshops, parents will be able to pick up tips on taking the hassle out of homework and helping their child be better organized.
Parent Academy workshops are free and open to all MCPS parents. They are held in locations across Montgomery County. Free childcare and interpretation services are available on request.
Chess Club Coordinators Needed! |
![]() |
The PTA is still seeking parents to coordinate and lead the PTA sponsored Chess Club this spring. This popular club relies solely on parent-support, there is no outside company associated with this program. Coordinators must be present after-school to lead and supervise this 8-week-session program. As a coordinator, your child will be allowed to participate in the Chess Club for free! For more information about PTA sponsored clubs, click here.
If you are interested in serving as a coordinator for the Chess Club, please send an email to the PTA President, Jen Green at hahleewude@verizon.net.
Building Services needs tennis balls |
![]() |
The Building Services Team is trying to collect enough tennis balls to cover every leg of every chair at CGES. Can you even imagine the number of tennis balls that is? While attempts with local country clubs have yielded some, we are asking for donations of tennis balls. You may drop off the tennis balls in the main office. Let's help Building Services protect our floors and keep CGES looking pristine!
If you have any questions, please contact, Jen Green at hahleewude@verizon.net.
