Announcement to Our Community: Important Information Regarding Student Privacy Rights
Dear Gaithersburg Middle School Community,
Each year, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is legally required to inform parents/guardians and eligible students about their rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA). Below is important information regarding these rights:
• Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA): FERPA grants parents/guardians and eligible students the right to request that “directory information” be withheld. Directory information may include the student’s or parent’s name, address, email address, telephone number, date of birth, participation in recognized activities and sports, awards received, and other similar information. To withhold this information, parents/guardians must complete and return MCPS Form 281-13: https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/forms/detail.aspx?formID=475&formNumber=281-13. These forms are available in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Portuguese, and Amharic.
• Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA): PPRA requires educational institutions to notify parents/guardians and eligible students about their rights concerning the district’s conduct of surveys, collection, and use of information for marketing purposes, and certain physical exams. Parents/guardians and eligible students may choose not to release any or specific parts of directory information by submitting the signed form to the school by the specified date. If you wish to change your decision at a later time, please contact the school directly.
Please be aware that withholding directory information affects all lists or references to students distributed or used outside of MCPS, whether prepared by the school, PTSA, central services, or other school organizations.

• Enmienda de Derechos de Protección del Alumno (PPRA): PPRA requiere que las instituciones educativas notifiquen a los padres/tutores y a los estudiantes elegibles sobre sus derechos en relación con la realización de encuestas por parte del distrito, la recopilación y el uso de información con fines de marketing y ciertos exámenes físicos.
