The Department of Health and Human Services, School Health Services (SHS) in partnership with MCPS (Montgomery County Public Schools) provides services to assure the health, safety, and well-being of students at Highland Elementary School in the health room.
The School Nurse provides consultation on health issues related to Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and section 504, crisis intervention, vision/hearing screening & emergency preparedness. They provide case management for students with special health needs & chronic health conditions and link students & families to county resources.
The Health Room is staffed daily by a School Health Room Technician. The Health Room Technician is here to provide first aid, maintain student’s health records and administer medications under the supervision of SCHN. It is important the school has accurate home, work, and cell phone numbers and emergency contact information if a parent cannot be reached.
School Health staff assists families of eligible uninsured students to enroll in the Maryland Children's Health and Care for Kids programs. We work hand in hand with the School Based Health Center.
Illness Policy: If students have a fever, diarrhea or are vomiting, they must stay home from school. To return to school, they must be fever and symptom free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication. Please remember you must call the office when your child is sick and send a note when your child returns to school.
Physical Examinations and Immunizations: A physical examination and vaccines are required for students entering Maryland public schools for the first time or transferring from a private school. The examination must be done within nine months before or six months after enrollment. Maryland Immunization Certificate 896, or computer form generated by a physician or health clinic must be given to the health room or enrollment secretary.
