Highland View ES- Everyone Belongs!

Everyone Belongs!

The Highland View students, faculty, and staff were the captive audience of the Everybody Belongs performance, an assembly about preventing bullying. The presenters informed as well as entertained the audience by performing a variety of sketches demonstrating techniques used by bullies and highlighting methods to discourage bullying.

Students quickly came to realize that what they might consider as fooling around activities such as name calling, teasing, excluding someone from a group, spreading rumors, and hitting others were actually forms of bullying.  The presenters, Paul Hadfield and Barry Wood, conveyed that we can see people hurt on the outside by looking at their facial expressions and body language, but people can also be hurt on the inside and we can’t always know how someone is feeling.

Take the time to get to know one another and learn about a person’s character.

Students participated in a variety of skits suggesting several ways to tackle bullying.  One method was to “treat others the way you wanted to be treated.”  Students were also encouraged to help those who are being bullied.  Instead of silently standing by and/or laughing, students were advised to try one of the following: invite the student being bullied to play, tell a teacher, make friends with classmates who are being bullied, talk to students who are bullied so they know you understand and that you don’t agree with those who are bullying.

Following these Rules Can Help Prevent Bullying

Highland View’s guidance counselor, Ms. Jones, reminded students to use “DeBug,” a school wide social skills program that helps students solve problems independently when they are being “bugged” by others who may be distracting or teasing them.
