University of Maryland Mathletics for Middle Schoolers

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND MATHLETICS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS
The Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education (MIMAUE) at the University of Maryland is still accepting new registrants, but spaces are filling up very quickly. At this time (posted 5/13/15), they are able to offer limited financial aid for families who could benefit from such services. In order to apply, the parent or guardian should submit a letter of hardship to mimauesummerprograms@umd.edu. Financial aid will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.

The 'Mathletics' program is precisely what it sounds like: a cultivating combination of mathematical enrichment and enjoyable athletics. Its goal is to better prepare underrepresented 6th, 7th and 8th grade students for the academic rigor of the coming years. The program provides a certified mathematics teacher, support from four UMD minority undergraduates who are pursuing STEM majors (e.g., mathematics and computer science), and a unique blend of mathematics instruction and athletics, with the goal of heightening current skills, assisting in further development, and reducing any mathematical anxiety the students may have but also allowing them to have an enjoyable experience.

Highlights include:

  • 90% of all students improved their mathematical knowledge, on average a 30% increase in knowledge
  • Students toured the University of Maryland's Xfinity Basketball Center and Gosset Football House, having the opportunity to interact with University athletes
  • Students learned about the various math-related career fields such as:
    • Sabermetrics analyst (sports/player analytics -- made popular by the movie, Moneyball)
    • Statistician
    • Computer Scientist
    • Math teacher

  • July 2014, UMD Alum and basketball legend, Len Elmore visited the Mathletic students

MIMAUE accepts both male and female students, has extended the duration of the summer programs and reduced the previous cost.

If you have any questions, you may call 301-405-6264 or e-mail mimauesummerprograms@umd.edu. Registration information is available at www.mimauesummercamps.com/mathletics-session-1. You may click here to view a flyer.

THE NORTHEAST GREAT DEBATE AT VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY
July 21-26, 2015
Every summer, Villanova University in partnership with the National Hispanic Institute seeks to engage freshmen students in high-end programs held at Villanova through their partnership with the National Hispanic Institute (NHI). For 9th grade students, there is a focus on reasoning, argumentation, and the power of communications. Students arrive to Villanova University in the Philadelphia area for a 6-day experience. The first portion of the program is spent forming teams and introductory games to get the "competition ready" for the second half of the program which is a 3-day tournament. Students work with abstract concepts and have to look at themes from multiple angles. Over 150 students from all over the United States, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic are expected to participate. Programs are open to students of all ethnic backgrounds; applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or better.

In addition to the freshmen program, the National Hispanic Institute hosts a program for 10th and 11th graders at the University of Rochester as well as an international program at Ciudad del Saber, Panamá, called the Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session (LDZ). The LDZ focuses on advancing the students’ understanding of organizational development, culture, and protocol. The format of the LDZ curriculum is a mock legislative session. Underneath the excitement of running for office and getting elected by peers, students walk away with insight they need to navigate social systems that they undoubtedly encounter in gaining admission to college, finding employment, and learning to become engaged citizens in the civic aspects of community life.

Finally, the Collegiate World Series (CWS) represents a final experience for their high school programs and is strictly reserved for emerging high school seniors who are preparing for the college admissions process. First piloted in 1991, the CWS had two major objectives: a) providing students with high levels of college admissions training to assist with their application process; and b) engaging students in learning the principles of inquiry based learning as a life management tool that can assist them as they make the transition from the security of family and familiarity of high school to college and the adult world. This program is held at Cabrini College.

Financial Aid
With the average costs of attending being $1,311 (based on 2014 figures), NHI provides a need-blind discount to students that average about 50% from the base cost of each of the three programs. The Great Debate is $620; the LDZ is $775; and the CWS is $600. There is $20 application fee, followed by a $100 deposit upon receiving notice of accepted admission. The remainder may be paid immediately thereafter or in installments, depending on the preferred payment arrangement decided between parents and the NHI business office. All costs include all the housing, meals and materials the students will need. Partial scholarships are also available for qualified students. Nominations are required; visit the Career Center for more information.

For additional information, visit their website at www.nhi-net.org, or contact Gabriela Morales Barajas at at 610-519-4863 or gabriela.morales@villanova.edu.
