Weekly Update for the Week of January 20, 2025

Good evening Cavalier Families. This is Ms. Adamson–Proud Principal of Kennedy High School–with your January 20th weekly update!

There is no school tomorrow, Monday, January 20th, to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Many of our students learn about Dr. King in the early years of their education. But some of our students have very little knowledge about Dr. King. Make sure your student is in school and paying attention to the various opportunities to learn all about this great leader and how he dedicated his life to civil rights and social justice.

Starting on Tuesday, we will have week-long activities to honor and recognize Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Week of Service. Students will meet in an Advisory session every day, and have an opportunity to complete student created lessons on some of the days. They will learn about the importance of Dr. King’s work and what they can do today to keep his Dream of equality and freedom alive.

The Hall of Fame and 60th Anniversary celebration will take place on the evening of February 8th. Please look online to buy tickets or to make donations to support the event. This year, we are inducting 5 new honorees, including a special posthumous induction of the late Mr. Kofi Frempong. We want to encourage as many people to attend as possible and have a full house for our 60th Anniversary celebration. Please buy your tickets today.

Attention Students Interested in Spring Sports!

Find more information in the SMORE newsletter or on the school’s website. Get ready to play – take care of your physical today!

WIDA Makes ups for students who were absent last week will take place soon. Students who were absent will receive information about when they can make up the test. WIDA testing will resume on February 4th and 5th. Please make sure your student is present to complete their testing requirement.
All the details about which students need to test are located on the JFK website. Please make sure you look to see if your students are scheduled to test. It is important that students don’t miss school, especially on testing days. Our goal is to test 100% of students who need to take the test.

Any student who wishes to perform in the Black History Month showcase should see Ms. Binta in the English office, or Ms. Konte in the DEI Office, or Ms. Henderson in the Science Department. We are looking for all acts that celebrate and elevate Black history and excellence. This includes singing, dancing, reciting, acting, and other performances that celebrate Black history. The show is scheduled for the evening of February 21st.

Are you interested in being a part of the Spring Musical?!  Please see the Kennedy website for flyer information or stop by to see Mr. Ploeger.

Please continue to remind your students to wear their ID everyday (to avoid being charged for a new one).  Remember that we are a closed campus, and the IDs help us to ensure that only our students are in the building, especially during lunch.

Thank you all for your support; and remember, we are stronger together.
