MAP Fall Diagnostic Guide
Family Guidance
Due to the emergency closure of school buildings this past spring, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) requires all local school districts to administer a fall diagnostic assessment in math and literacy to students in grades Kindergarten through 12. The diagnostic assessment is designed to inform instruction, recovery and intervention and account for learning loss, as well as determine the present performance levels of students on math and literacy standards. We will administer the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment to serve as our fall diagnostic. For the fall administration, we will be using the virtual MAP assessment, administered at home, during a window in September and early October.
Kingsview has identified the following dates and times for testing:
Wednesday, September 16, 2020 from 9:00 to 11:15 and 12:30 to 2:45 (Second block is only necessary if they have not completed test in first block of time)
And
Wednesday, September 23, 2020 from 9:00 to 11:15 and 12:30 to 2:45 (Second block is only necessary if they have not completed test in first block of time)
Students will report to their period 1 class on both days by 9:00.

MCPS will be using the results from the MAP assessment in mathematics to monitor each student’s progress throughout the school year as well as progress from one school year to the next. Teachers and school staff utilize the MAP scores to inform instruction, personalize the learning as well as to measure the performance and growth of students. MAP scores are one data point of many that teachers utilize to inform teaching and learning on a whole class, small group and individual basis.
As an overview to understand the MAP assessment, an overview of how MAP works, what it measures, and common questions you may access this resource from the NWEA website, the creator of the MAP assessment.
Test Preparation
Prior to Test Day
- Make sure your child’s device has an internet connection.
- If your child is taking the assessment on a personal device, disable pop-up blocking on your internet browser. MCPS Chromebooks have this feature disabled already.
- If your child is taking the assessment on a personal device, make sure it meets the testing requirements using the Workstation Diagnostic Tool from NWEA. MCPS Chromebooks already meet the testing requirements.
- For students taking the MAP-RF assessment, responses are recorded orally . Please have your child take the assessment in a space with minimal background noise. MCPS chromebooks have a microphone built in, but your child may want to use headphones with a microphone to reduce noise interference with their recordings.
- To access and review the types of questions your child will experience, visit practice.mapnwea.org (Username: grow, Password: grow)
- Your school will organize a “get ready” experience to ensure your child is set up and ready to take the assessment.
- As a resource, you can view a video of how your child will log into the assessment. LINK TO VIDEO
On Test Day
- Each school will inform families of their child’s testing day(s)/times.
- Minimize distractions for your child as much as possible; a quiet environment is recommended for test administration.
- Allow the teacher/proctor to open the session first.
- Once prompted by the teacher, log in at test.mapnwea.org
- The school will provide you with information about how to communicate with the teacher/proctor during the test if issues arise.
- Follow any additional instructions from the teacher/proctor.
Accommodations
If your child receives accommodations through 504, English Learner (EL) Plan, or an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), your school case manager will work with the school test coordinator to arrange for the administration of the accommodations in a virtual setting.
