Dear Lakewood Elementary School Parents and Guardians:

We are gearing up for the 2018-2019 school year! I am hoping you are still enjoying all of the fun things that come with summer break!  I also want to extend a special welcome to the parents of our kindergarten children and parents of students new to Lakewood Elementary School (LES) as we are looking forward to another wonderful school year! The first day of school this year is Tuesday, September 4, 2018.

The purpose of this letter and its attachments is to provide communication about this upcoming academic school year so you may begin the year with the information you need.  This letter also includes an announcement of our Open House and a summary of who is new at LES, along with the following attachments: bus transportation schedules, a school calendar, a school supply list,  cafeteria information, Annual Notice for Directory Information and Student Privacy, PTA news, and a few other important pieces of information.

A Warm Welcome to New Staff

Due to the decrease in our student enrollment we have lost a couple of staff members and a classroom in both Grade 3 and Grade 4.  Also, there have been a few minor changes to our staff this year because of retirements and school transfers. Please welcome all of our new folks! First, join me in welcoming our new assistant principal, Ms. Anne Taylor, who began July 1. She is replacing Ms. Nora Jones who is enjoying retirement in her other adopted “home” of Zambia.  Ms. Taylor has worked in MCPS for 22 years as a classroom teacher, staff development teacher, academy coordinator, and grade-level administrator.  She also has served as a coordinator in the Department of Student Services and was a supervisor in the Office of Curriculum and Instructional Programs. She is married with two children and lives in Olney.  Her husband, Barry, is an ESOL teacher at Roscoe Nix ES.  Her daughter, Katherine, is a Grade 8 student at Eastern MS.  Her son, Patrick, is a Grade 10 student at Montgomery Blair HS.  Mrs. Taylor is excited to join our Lakewood community and looks forward to supporting students, families, and classroom teachers.

Other changes include: Mrs. Kristen Llanes has left LES to teach Grade 3 at Burtonsville ES, which is much closer to her home. Mrs. Adria Johnson has moved from Grade 3 to Grade 4.  Mrs. Lyn Mullinax has moved from Grade 4 to Grade 5 to replace Ms. Hannah Achilles, who will be teaching Grade 3 at Barnsley ES.  Mrs. Beth Bell has taken on a new position also at Barnsley ES and we welcome Mrs. Courtney Walder who will fill our Reading Initiative position.  Finally, I would like to introduce Ms. Allison Morgan, new school psychologist, who has been assigned to LES this year.

I truly believe that our new staff members have a genuine commitment to high standards for equity and excellence for all students and are excited to be joining the Lakewood team and working closely with all of the staff here. When you see any of our new folks, please join me in welcoming them into our family!

School Hours

  • Our regular school hours are 9:00 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.  Students may arrive between 8:40 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.  Adult supervision provided by Lakewood staff will not begin until 8:40 a.m.  Please do not send or drop off your child to school earlier than 8:40 a.m.
  • Students will need to be unpacked and ready to start school by 9:00 a.m.  Students who arrive after 9:00 a.m. will be considered tardy and will need to be signed in by a parent or guardian in the main office. On-time arrival means smooth opening routines and maximizes instructional time.
  • All students should report directly to the hallways outside of their classrooms.  Bus patrols will escort Kindergarten students to their classrooms.  During the first week of school, teachers will greet their students by holding signs designating their name and the grade they teach.
  • Parents, please make every attempt to not rush through our parking lot in the morning to get your child here on time. We want to avoid any near misses of staff or parents getting side-swiped by a car moving away too fast.
  • ALL students and parents should be entering school through the front, main doors, rain or shine—the side doors are locked daily. Thank you for your cooperation in this effort.
  • Finally, if you need to pick up your child prior to the normal dismissal time, it is preferable that you do so prior to 3:00 p.m. Please come to the main office to sign out your student.

Open House

Please mark your calendars for our annual Open House from 1-3 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2018. Students and parents can take this opportunity to find their classroom assignments, meet their teachers, and tour the building.  Please understand that this is not a time for teacher conferences; it is simply a time to reduce anxiety by giving students the opportunity to visit their new teacher and classroom so they will know who to look for and where to go the first day of school.  During the Open House, our PTA invites you to join the PTA and to sign up for the volunteer program, Giant Bonus Bucks, etc. and any other activities planned for this school year.

Due to the number of students leaving and entering the school over the summer months and the excessive cost of postage, we will not be sending class lists home. All 2018-2019 classroom assignments will be posted on our school website prior to Open House on Thursday, August 30, 2018, no later than 11:00 a.m.  They also will be posted in the window in the front of the school at 12:50 p.m., in time for open house. Please do not call the school for these assignments as they will not be completed or available prior to this time. As a friendly reminder, a Connect-Ed message will be sent to all registered families once classroom lists are posted on the website.

As always, our priorities for grouping students include the student’s academic level along with the gender, racial and ethnic balance of the class.  Staff members at the school put considerable effort into balancing our classes and it is extremely difficult to change student placements without affecting dozens of other children.

Back to School Night

We have made a slight change to our annual Back to School Night (BTSN). This year, we have scheduled only one evening, but two sessions so parents with more than one child can visit in one evening or visit a specialist during one of the sessions. This year BTSN is scheduled for Thursday September 13th, 7–8:30 p.m. This is an opportunity for you to meet your child’s teacher, visit your child’s classroom, and learn about our PTA.  This event is strongly recommended for parents only.  Hope to see you all!

Schedule for BTSN

7:00 – 7:35 p.m.  Report to first session/Homeroom

7:35 – 7:50 p.m.  Welcome video

7:50 – 7:55 p.m.  Transition to second session

7:55 – 8:30 p.m.  Session two/Homeroom or Specialist Visit

The PTA will be set up in our main hallway starting at 6:45 p.m. to meet/greet new parents and to encourage membership and share information regarding the many fun, exciting events they are sponsoring for the new school year.

Bar-T staff will also be available to speak to parents interested in their Before/After School Care Program.  Mrs. Jessica FitzGerald is our Lakewood Bar-T site director.  Bar-T also offers Kindergarten Enrichment (program for 4 year-olds) and Kiddie Club (program for 3 year-olds).   To enroll your child in any of Bar-T’s programs, please call (301) 948-3172.

Baldrige-guided School Improvement Planning Process (BGSIP)

The development of the School Improvement Plan (SIP) is part of the continuous improvement process that we use to ensure that all students are achieving at high levels. This year-long cyclical process involves multiple stakeholders developing and implementing a well-designed plan to achieve school goals and targets. The process begins with the essential action of identifying students with the greatest needs using multiple sources of data and then developing and implementing professional learning plans to support the attainment of our school improvement goals. We will be drafting our SIP over the summer and would like to collect your feedback and ideas. The draft SIP will be available at BTSN and we will be requesting feedback at that time. Updates will be provided throughout the school year. Please note: parent and student voice in this process is very important to us!

PTA News

I want to thank outgoing PTA president Mrs. Lianne Brinch and her board for their hard work this past year and give a hearty welcome to Mrs. Jennifer Eisenfeld as the incoming PTA president. The board and I, along with Ms. Taylor, met this summer and have planned some really great events for this next school year. The draft budget was also updated and will be shared and voted on at the September 13th BTSN, which is also the initial PTA meeting.

School Supply Lists

Suggested school supply lists and other information related to MCPS policy on elementary school fees and supplies can be found at the LES website,, click on HOME.

Bus Route information

Information concerning the bus runs for the school year is attached.  Although our routes are similar to last year, we still ask you to review this information to confirm your bus stop and arrival/departure times before the first day of school.  Each bus will have route numbers displayed in their side window.  The transportation office would like students to become familiar with their route number so that there is less confusion when substitute or replacement buses are used.  If you are a new parent to LES, it would be very helpful for you to check with your neighbors about bus stops and arrival times in your neighborhood. During the first week of school, the buses will not always run exactly to this schedule. Please have your children out at least 10 minutes early and have them wait at least 10 minutes past the scheduled time until the buses have settled into their routines.  We are asking that students who are bus riders ride their buses on the first day of school.

Communication and Easy Access to LES Home Page

Go to Montgomery County Public Schools Web site:  Click ES Schools, find Lakewood ES and click on link or type: Add to your favorites!

Communication and information from the Principal’s office as well as other school, PTA and school system events will be posted throughout the year on our website.  Our website will be maintained in a timely manner so that our Lakewood families and friends may stay current on important information and updates. Please be sure to give us feedback as to upgrades or revisions you might suggest for our website. Thank you!

Lakewood’s main office will have hard copies of this August mailer available for families who wish to pick one up and do not have access to the web. Please feel free to stop by and grab a copy!

I look forward to another productive school year with your help! Thank you for your continued support—feel free to contact me at the school if you have any specific questions or concerns.
