Hello Lakewood community, this is Principal Berner with information for the school week of Monday, December 10th, through Friday, December 14th.

At the PTA meeting last Tuesday, our membership committee shared the number of members to date—we have approximately 294 families who have joined PTA! This is an increase from last year. Please join PTA if you haven’t yet! Your membership and donations help with our programming needs and classroom materials! This year the PTA asked for a lump sum instead of doing a lot of fundraising--there are four different levels of participation. The Eaglet level is the least expensive at $30 and will cover the $25 classroom fee for parties and your membership. (If you do not plan to join, they are requesting that you still contribute to the $25 classroom fee for the parties.) We need your participation!! Please join at: www.lakewoodpta.com/membership.html

We also held the drawing with the following two families winning the random selection for the personal parking spots and one student who has won Principal For The Day. Congratulations to these families!  I will contact the student winner and as soon as the signs are made, families who won the parking spot will be contacted with more information. Thank you all for supporting the Lakewood PTA through your dues and donations.

**News That You Can Use:

  • Morning drop off and Afternoon pick up reminders: …please help us keep our children safe!

Ms. Taylor, Mr. Thomson and I are working together on the morning and dismissal drop off patterns to ensure that students either being dropped off or picked up is done in a safe and timely manner. Patrols will be supporting staff for the drop off in the morning as well as the afternoon pick up.

The carpool lane is a single lane so please wait patiently and do not pass cars that are unloading children.

Please drop off your child in the carpool lane, unless you plan to walk them into school or are taking them off the school premises. You are welcome to park in the parking lot or in a designated handicapped parking spot (if you have a placard) and walk your child into school.

  • December Attire:  Don’t forget to send your children to school with appropriate attire for outdoor recess—hats, gloves/mittens and winter coats. I plan to send students out to recess on a regular basis unless we are having inclement weather, such as rain, snow or wind chill temperatures under 32 degrees. Also, remember to label all outerwear and personal items with your child’s name. If your child is missing any items, you are free to check the Lost and Found in the front hallway.

  • MCPS Winter Weather information

We have entered the season where we will be experiencing delayed openings and potentially more days when school will be closed and need everyone to be monitoring the news for school closures and delays updates. MCPS offers numerous ways for parents to learn about school closures, delayed openings, and early dismissals due to inclement weather. Sign up for AlertMCPS and receive text messages or e-mails from MCPS during weather-related emergencies and other major events that impact school system operations. Parents can also sign up to receive alerts specific to our school by visiting http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/emergency/alertmcps.aspx.  You can also follow MCPS on Twitter: http://twitter.com/mcps or @MCPS

** Thought for the Week:

December: A month of light, snow and feasts; time to make amends and tie loose ends; finish off what you started and hope your wishes come true.

Remember to have a great week…breathe deeply and take time to take care of yourselves!
