National Junior Honor Society
History
The National Junior Honor Society was founded in 1929 in the hopes of creating an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. The ideals of scholarship, character, service, and citizenship remain as relevant today as they were in 1929. Now, 75 years later, the NJHS has become a prestigious organization, ranking high among administrators, faculty members, students, parents, and residents of the school community. Through the NJHS chapter service activities and academic standards members maintain and extend the qualities that won them selection. In the past 75 years the societies have flourished. More than 5,000 NJHS and 14,000 NJHS chapters are chartered in more than 75 countries worldwide. It is estimated that more than 200,000 students become members of the NJHS annually. All chapters have the collective goal of providing direct support in the classroom while giving students unique opportunities for growth and development outside of the standard classroom.
Montgomery Village Chapter
The Montgomery Village Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society seeks to recognize and offer opportunities to students who demonstrate outstanding qualities in five areas: scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. Membership in the National Junior Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a middle school student. All seventh and eight grade students who meet the initial criteria of scholarship (a 3.5 cumulative grade point average) are considered for the honor of induction into this prestigious society. Selection for membership is by the faculty council and is based upon the pillars of the society (scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character.) Once inducted into the society, all members are to maintain the standards by which they were selected (i.e., continued performance at or above the required GPA, involvement in service projects, commitment to leadership, and pledge to citizenship). MVMS was granted its NJHS charter in January 2005, and since then it has worked to recognize the merit and achievement of its students while continuing to positively influence the Montgomery Village school community.
